DJ Series Headphones
Designed specifically for DJs, these headphones are not only comfortable on your ears, but on your eardrums as well. While you've got 'em wildin' out on the dance floor, you can safely keep up on what's going on with the incredibly clean S-Logic Surround Sound which has 40% lower dB, giving you the same loudness sensation without the risk of eventual hearing loss. The DJ1s also produce up to 60% less radiation than ordinary headphones.
Don't take all this safety to mean that the sound has been compromised somehow. Au contraire. While suppressing the outside noise with their closed ear design, the DJ1s S-Logic will make it seem like you're in the center of a live concert. The 50 millimeter Mylar electro acoustical driver produces impressive sound pressure so you feel the distance and detachment of sounds as they come at you from all angles for a full-on 3-D experience.
The easily recognizable black and white logo design also makes them aesthetically pleasing and easy to find in the UV-lighting of most nightclub situations. When you're done for the night, they easily fold up for compact storage and easy transportation till your next gig.

It's a little disconcerting the first time you hear them, you'd swear the artist is performing in the very room you're in until you take them off. Every set of headphones I've listened to, including my friends' Bose Quietcomfort 2's and Sennheiser HD280 Pros, still sound like you're listening to headphones. By that I mean the music is coming from right next to your head and you can tell by the sound of it. With these it's closer to being in a room with a high quality surround setup, it's not perfect but it's amazingly good.
The sound quality of these is nothing short of stellar, I listened to most of the Ultrasone sample CD (not really my style of music but it still sounded amazing) then figured that they probably included the CD just to make you go "Wow!" and that they would sound more like everyday headphones with regular music. After going through various MP3's in my collection and even trying them with Pandora streaming radio they still impress.
The highs are perfect, everything is clear and sounds natural without overpowering the rest of the music. Without adjusting any EQ's on my media player the sound is very accurate and perfectly balanced. The bass is once again very tight and accurate without obstructing the rest of the music. That being said I like a little extra bass sometimes, turn up the bass on your EQ and you won't be disappointed. I'm not an audiophile and I don't have a degree in audio engineering but I love music. If I'm near anything that can play back songs I'm listening to music, I've never heard it sound better than with these Ultrasone's
Breaking it down:
-Fun, high quality headphones at a good price.
-S-Logic isn't groundbreaking, but listeners will notice a difference. It's a nice change to in-ear buds, or smaller soundscapes like the Audio Technia MTH-50s. For me, the most noticeable aspect of S-Logic is the bass, which seems to play on the "floor" of the soundscape. It packs a great thump without becoming overpowering.
-Acceptable in all genres, and actually seems to modify the bass level depending on genre played.
-Sturdy build quality.
-They are pretty bulky, and don't look as sleek as some of the more "designer" headphones.
-The top band is initially uncomfortable and must be stretched with textbooks for at least a week. Also the headband padding is too hard, it needs to be replaced with a softer foam. PLEASE take note of this, because it is a very divisive issue on buying these cans. If you can't stand the comfort, its really not worth it.
I don't have an audiophile's vocabulary, so I'll just jump straight to the good and bad of the Ultrasone DJ1 bullet-point style:
- Comfortable pads and size
- Punchy bass, decent mids, and surprisingly good highs
- Aesthetically well designed (though style doesn't really matter to me)
- Solid build quality
- Reasonable price
- Not really bad, per se, just something to be aware of: the DJ1s don't produce a head shaking, blow-your-mind kind of bass - which isn't something I wanted when shopping for these headphones, but keep that in mind if you are the kind of person that needs a TON of bass, regardless of the mid/high frequencies. The bass is there, but it's punchy and precise, not overwhelming. Which is a plus for people with more varied tastes in music.
Conclusion: Well-rounded headphones with exceptional (but not overwhelming) bass.
What you get in the box doesn't seem like an awful lot but the headphones themselves are worth the price. They come with a velvet pouch and a testing CD. The pouch is alright, but if you're looking for something better check out the UDG U8201BL Creator DJ Headphone Hard Case. The CD has a few good tracks but its nothing too special, just some mixes.
Now, moving on to the headphones themselves, I'd like to point out that these are basically a rehashed version of the Ultrasone HFI-580's. So, if you're interested in those these will do basically the same job for you. The only real differences are the appearance of the two headphones and the fact that the DJ1's have a coiled cable, which is a bit easier to manage.
These should be good for long listening sessions. The padding around the cups and on the headband is nice and comfortable. However, they do exert a bit of pressure, not too much, but if you are sensitive to that sort of thing you might want to try them first. I found the pressure to be a good thing, as it helps with isolation, and I was very comfortable while wearing them.
The audio quality is superb. These deliver some really good tight, punchy bass (a bit punchier than the M50's) and the highs and mids are very crisp and clear. The soundstaging is great, it does a better job in this area than the Audio-Technica M50's, in my opinion.
I listened to a lot of electronic and hip-hop and these cans made both the genres sound really energetic.Read more ›
