Love Lana, hate that they sold me a censored version

I love Lana Del Rey so this review is nothing to do with this album on her part. I am giving this one star because the title for the item SPECIFICALLY states that this is the "Explicit" version, which I expected. I hate censored albums and that is what I received. If you want to hear this awesome album as it should be, you wont get it here. This is the censored version and I am really ticked about how misleading this was.

I ordered this album expecting to hear the songs as they were originally performed by Lana, but instead they are the clean versions of her songs with all explicit words removed from the song. I am upset with this order because it specifically says in the title that it is "explicit" but the vinyl I received is ruined.

As other reviewers have noted, this is the censored version--even though it clearly states Explicit in the item description. I should have read reviews before buying, but it never occurred to me that a censored LP for this record would even be pressed. No one who's buying this album on vinyl wants the censored version, including me and including you. Look elsewhere, don't buy here.

I happened upon Lana Del Rey's music only a few years ago and since then, she has become my all-time favorite female artist...and I'm no youngster.

Before Lana, there was only one music artist that held a very deep place in my soul...David Bowie, my long-time love since I was 12. Now, there is Bowie and Lana. I love, love, love her... (If I could ask God for a wish come true before leaving this earth...it would be to meet and hug the two of them because their music has touched my soul very, truly deeply and kept me going. God bless!)

I've run across some Lana haters, and they can hate Lana all they want, but they can never touch her...she is soooooo way beyond them...touching realms they'll never be able to reach, let alone touch.

I would recommend listening to her music with lights turned down low, with no other distractions and just let it all seep right in.

The return of the queen..

The return of the queen of melancholy, Ultraviolence which is Del Rey's second major album release (but third overall) is really just a rehash of what made "Born to Die" so great. That being said it doesn't diminish Ultraviolence in the slightlest, if it's even more possible she sounds more detached and emotionless than she did on "Born to Die". The are few bright spots here; I mean as far beats go with "West Coast" being the best example. The lyrics are just as clever as any you'll find on "Born to Die". The tracks range from depressing to funny. I know I shouldn't like a song about domestic violence but the title track is among the best here (a lot of people got upset about this but Janet also released a song like this on Velvet Rope). 'I _My Way Up to the Top" is the funniest track here with lyrics "You got nothing, I got tested, and I passed" yeah its social commentary about some of the girls in the industry without pointing fingers (which too many artist do). "Money Power Glory", "Cruel World" ,"West Coast" "Shades of Cool" and "Brooklyn Baby" being the among the highlights of the release and do yourself a favor and just stick to the standard version of this album the deluxe version doesn't add anything interesting to it.

Old School Styling, Modern Day Lyrics, and a Voice that Sends Shivers Down the Spine

I can't get enough of Lana Del Rey. I've been playing this album during my daily commute for about a month now, and I'm not tired of it yet. Her voice is the main attraction on this album, followed closely by the lyrics, which I can actually understand for the most part. There are a few places where she slurs a bit, but that's part of her style and her charm. The music is lovely, and the instruments blend with her voice nicely, complementing instead of competing. Does the explicit language take away from the experience for me? No, it seldom does. I prefer to listen to the original versions of songs, not something doctored up to meet someone else's ideas of propriety. Give me the genuine article, the true vision of the artist. In this case, the impropriety of the lyrics is such a contrast to the sweetness of Lana's voice, it makes this recording a musical experience surprisingly and pleasingly unlike what I usually expect from an explicit version of a pop album. In fact, this album almost doesn't count as "pop" in my book. It reminds me of the style of music from the 1940s or 50s or maybe even earlier, but with lyrics you'd never have dreamed of hearing back then. But they would have loved her voice back then as much as we all love it today.

I bought the 2LP vinyl version of this album.

Overall, the pressing seems pretty decent. No skips, scratches, etc. I'm not a fan of the packaging, however. Most LPs that come with 2 discs have a case that opens up like a book and the record slides into each side of the book. In this, the case doesn't not open up and both records are slid into the same side, only separated by a paper-covering.

As for the actual album itself, it's a good album. Not as good as Born to Die or Paradise, in my opinion, but still good. It took a couple listens for me to really like it, but I like how this album tells a very interesting story. And you can see that LDR has come a long way in honing her craft since she seems to be taking more risks with Ultraviolence and hitting a wider variety of notes and octaves.
