Ulysses Guide to the Los Angeles River, The Paperback – June 1, 2009

5.0 out of 5 stars 4 ratings

The culture of Los Angeles flows -- both figurative and quite literally -- through its central vein: The River. This book is borne from a fascination and love that precedes the attention that has shifted back to this flow. Fathered by the late Ulysses Zemanova and further nurtured by its co-authors/editors, The Ulysses Guide to the Los Angeles River moves beyond the overexposed culture of graffiti and misunderstood world of scientific discovery. The Ulysses Guide wishes to bring to light the authors' interest, if only to spawn more within its readers. The Ulysses Guide's first volume has two focuses: Biology and Art. Los Angeles-based artwork contributions from: Chaz Bojorquez, ZES, Jack Rudy, Chuey Quintanar, Steve Martinez, Gregg Stone, Robert Meinhardt, Chris Brand, SinerLTS, Evan Skrederstu, Rob Sato, and more. Interviews with artists also included. Good-sized, thick, lots of color photos of both nature and graffiti art.

Ulysses Guide to the LA River
I bought this book by chance at an art opening last year. Love, love, love the contents - which manages to span graffiti, fine art, ecology, biology, high-brow design and aesthetic, tattooing and story-telling. This book is a gem. Its unique take on the L.A. River as a living, evolving canvas, is both science and magic. "Ulysses Guide" gives a rare voice to the slime and sublime dichotomy that is Los Angeles.

The Ulysses Guide to the Los Angeles River is an imaginative and beautiful book. Even the outside cover is beautifully designed and cleverly made to look aged. The information about the LA River is so interesting. I loved the photographs and the original art. There are wonderful stories that tell the history of this Southern California landmark that you would not read in a traditional history book. I read it from cover to cover and was pleasantly surprised at how well it held my attention. I've purchased several copies and given them as presents to my friends. I'm looking forward to the next installment, The Ulysses Guide to the Los Angeles River, Vol. 2 History and Architecture.

The Ulysses Guide to the Los Angeles River is an amazing book. It is unique because of the amount of artistry and pictures in the book along with the written notes from the author in the book. The art is truly amazing and the information and stories are entertaining and enjoyable. The section on graffiti is really cool and gives you insight into what it is all about. Truly a must read. I especially loved the letter written by a frogtown resident!
