For an ultra-minimal look, the conceal bookshelf from Umbra mounts to the wall and becomes invisible behind a stack of books, giving the books the appearance of floating in Mid-Air. Attach the sturdy, L-shaped shelf to the wall with the included mounting hardware and slide one book onto the ledge so that the ledge is sandwiched between the book's cover and pages. Secure the cover in place using the integrated clips beneath the ledge. Stack up to 15-pound (or 8-Inch) of small to medium books on top of the first book until the shelf is obscured from view. Conceal is constructed of strong, powder-coated steel and is available in two finishes. Each pack of 3 includes shelves that measure 5 by 5 by 5-1/2-inch. I put a few up in my small living room next to my TV and a IKEA wall-shelf. It looks great and it does hold up a lot. But how much does it hold up? That also depends on your books.
One tip: To know when to stop piling more books on, use your hand and push down from the top a little bit. If it starts to shake and feels quite heavy, it is time to stop and leave it at that.
I bought two of these large ones, 3 of the small ones, and 5 of the double-wide ones.
I made corner shelves with one of the 'single' ones and one of the '2 wide' shelves (See my customer images). For these, I used toggle bolts that are rated for something like 200lbs. (I use them for everything that I'm putting up not into a stud. You can get them on Amazon http://www.amazon.com/Toggler-Toggle-FF-B-588-D-Specifications-Threads/dp/B0051IAQN2/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1362412360&sr=8-4&keywords=snap+toggle) The holes were slightly too small for the standard sized bolts I was using, so I just drilled them out a mm or two bigger. Not a hard fix, just a bit irritating when I realized it on the first one when I was on the ladder. The small one also had this problem. One convenient thing is that the anchor holes on the large one and the small one are in the same spot. If you find you need a different size, you can always replace it.
This large one won't work with a regular-sized hard back book, (ie Harry Potter hard back sized). I have a bajillion books, so finding one that worked wasn't hard, but it can't be just any hard back book. The smaller sized ones can deal with a regular sized hard back book or even a 'book club' sized hard back. It just makes the shelf smaller. I wish the smaller size was made with the same thickness of metal as the larger size. I think it would help with any sagging issues. That being said, I adjusted the books I had on each shelf until they were the right heaviness - I couldn't put all high quality/heavy paper/academic books on one shelf and all trade paperbacks on another - I mixed them up.
I originally wanted to use the large ones to hold my hubs stash of D&D books (hard back, about 12" tall, 9" deep, 1" thick), but the shelf started sagging after adding 7-8 books. The books were heavy, and add up fast. I wasn't too broken up about it as I had plenty of other books to take their place.
I'm very happy with this product and I'm excited to have space for more books. I turned it into a completely custom built-in book case that holds 150 books for about one hundred dollars.
Installation was extremely easy -- just screw the shelf into any wall normal wall (e.g., drywall, paneling). No anchors are needed. I was a bit skeptical at first and expected for the books to fall or the shelf to bend, but no accidents after over a week. All in all, these shelves work well and are an interesting way to display your books. I just think that they should be a bit less expensive, as they're basically metal brackets; hence the four stars.
They are awesome! And super easy to assemble. I have been in need of some sort of wall shelving that is light weight for our bathroom in our newly bought RV. As you may know Rv's are very limited in space and I was in need of a shelf for our bathroom towels; however, the wall in our rv are not very thick and could not handle heavy objects. I went ahead and bought 2 shelves and could not be any happier!
I would recommend this shelving to everyone! Definitely very versatile and NOT just for book!
Items needed to do install: 1-drill 2-hardware 3-1/4 drill bit 4- stud finder
Best of luck! Hope this helped.
