As for how well it works with digging into hard ice cream that is really frozen, I'm talking Elsa Frozen solid, it works just great. We have an ice cream scoop from Pampered Chef (which supposed to be the best) and I'd say this one compares to it. If you want big scoops of ice cream than you'll need to run the scoop at least three times around the ice cream container to get the size you would at an ice cream shop, which is how they get those big scoops anyway if you watch them scoop your ice cream.
My husband really likes the handle on this scoop over our Pampered Chef scoop. I agree it is easier for the little hands in our house, not meaning my husbands hands, but the kids hand to grip and scoop ice cream for themselves. This is also a lot lighter in weight over our Pampered Chef scoop too which I like and after running this one through the dishwasher (which again it says not to do) it still looks nice unlike our Pampered Chef scoop (which also says not to put in dishwasher) that looks like it was left outside for years as the finish is totally ugly now. LOL
Anyway, if you're wanting an ice cream scoop so don't keep bending all your spoons when scooping ice cream this is one I would recommend for sure.
I've bought the expensive ones you get at a cooking supply show, I've gotten two or three from Target of different brands... I've even been gifted one that was advertised as "never" sticking. They all stuck to my beloved ice cream.
Enter this beauty. Now, first time around, my husband threw it in the dishwasher which is a no-no. It immediately took on that faded tin look. That's probably why I tell him not to put metal in the dishwasher (like, at all). One day, when I beat him over the head with a ruined dutch oven, maybe he'll learn.
I went to have an evening dip of some lovely peanut butter cup ice cream. I slid the scoop in and it GLIDED across the dessert, rolling it into this beautiful ball. I was so excited that I didn't turn it and ended up flinging the first scoop onto the counter with a yelp. Like I said, I'm not used to them actually working! I filled bowls for myself and my daughter with ease and without having to rinse the scoop with warm water or anything! I was so happy that I honestly think I enjoyed my ice cream even more than usual.
P.S. I totally ate the scoop that hit the counter.
The Uscoop is solid aluminum, which is lightweight and conducts heat. I tried the it side-by-side with my fluid-filled scoop. I confess that the Uscoop is so lovely and comfortable in hand that I was hoping it would do as well as my old scoop. I was surprised to find that it did better. It cut through hard ice cream more easily than my fluid-filled scoop. The design by Jordan Murphy is beautiful and practical. It keeps my knuckles relatively clean. The scoop is flat on the bottom, so it rests on the countertop without rolling. It cannot be put in a dishwasher, but aluminum never can (it will oxidize), so I’m used to that. The Uscoop measures 7”l x 2”w x 1.75”h. It’s the perfect ice cream scoop.
Have you ever approached a hard-frozen container that you're itching to get into, but that you know is hard as a rock? The desire to get to the ice cream is just barely equal to the agony you're gonna go through, getting the ice cream into a bowl and ready to eat.
GET THIS SCOOP and forget about those problems. No sense me talking about it. You have to grab that scoop yourself and play with the various ways to hold it to get the job done. Locally, we have a family-owned, multi-generation "frozen custard" shop. I hate buying cones, because they're very expensive, so I get pre-frozen quarts. Those babies are HARD. But now that I have this wonderful Umbra Scoop, I can pull a quart from my home freezer and IMMEDIATELY start digging out the good stuff! One especially good feature: the scoop makes it possible to shave off layers of the frozen ice cream or custard, without trying to scoop up a big ball of the stuff in one go.
Overall: get this fine tool, and enJOY serving ice cream and frozen again ... with no sore wrist!
