The story is about Alena, a young woman suffering from severe PTSD as a result of being violently raped while in high school.
She doesn’t seem to always make the best decisions, but I think that is largely due to her refusal to continue with therapy. She is also still very young and doesn’t have much of a support system other than her mother (and eventual best friend).
When she begins her college career, she falls for Philip instantly. What was interesting was when she realized she’d subconsciously chosen him to ‘fix’ her, because as infuriating as it was to watch her act hot with him one moment and cold the next, I breathed a sigh of relief when she told herself she’d be fine with or without him. She did a bit of self-evaluating, and it finally paid off. She learned how to be stronger, which sends a great message to women.
I think the author’s style is unique: It’s intelligent and eloquent, as well as quite modern in its subject matter and events. There is one scene where she describes the orchard near Alena’s dorm. I really enjoyed this because it was incredibly artistic; the scenery was actually amended to fit Alena’s feelings. Very well done!
A great new adult story that is self-contained yet has subtle hints of possible more to come.
The terrible crime that wounded Alena is gradually revealed in the course of the story. Shyly she goes out to an event early in the semester and finds herself immediately attracted to a cute West Indian guy, Phillip, even though she is far from emotionally healed enough to build a relationship. Phillip’s unwavering love and concern for Alena’s feelings help her on her healing journey. Her new friend, a California girl named Becca also provides emotional support and a teasing, playful perspective. But each time Alena starts to rise up and come out of her shell, unexpected flashbacks from her trauma and complications in her love life rise up to knock her down again.
Alena’s secrets are revealed as she travels the twisting path of self-discovery, healing and new threats. A rival for Phillip's affection, also from Barbados, shares secrets from his past tries to convince Alena that Phillip would never be serious about a white girl. Both Alena and Phillip have secrets they fear to reveal. Meanwhile, the violent abuser who shattered Alena's life is still obsessed with her. Alena must find the courage to reclaim her life and her future. Victims of violent crime may find that this story resonates for them in particular.
The book is written in an unusual, unique voice that I sometimes found hard to follow, this may just be me but I had to take off one star for some first novel awkwardness. The author shows great promise for future works and many more stories to tell.
I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
