The Zodiac Killer murdered five people between December of 1968 and October of 1969. The murders were followed by letters to the news media demanding publication of his threats and other written material, on pain of further killings. As the Unabomber, Theodore Kaczynski murdered three people and injured many more, over a period beginning in May of 1978 and continuing through April of 1995. His murders were followed by letters to the news media demanding publication of the letters themselves, and the so-called “Manifesto,” on pain of further killings.
These were not “serial killers,” as the term is commonly understood, but deeply disaffected individuals, each with an axe to grind against the world. They moved in the same locations at the same time. They teased the authorities with cryptic clues as to their whereabouts and motives. Each killer identified himself with a graffiti consisting of lines within a circle. Both made references to opera.
Their methods were different, but their madness was the same.
This book highlights the amazing similarities between Kaczynski
and the Zodiac, the two most enigmatic and cerebral killers in
U.S. history.

A Worthwhile Read

I've read a lot of material on the Zodiac killer, and I've also read Kaczynski's "Technological Slavery" Collected Writings... this book requires some knowledge of both cases. If you don't know anything about either, this book is not for you. Kaczynski was a Zodiac suspect, but was ultimately dismissed. Oswell does a great job of showing why TJK is the most likely suspect, and that maybe the Zodiac is already in custody for the Unabomber crimes.

He makes a very compelling argument. I kept "almost" buying this book for my Kindle... I'd read the description, think about it, and then go, ehhh. Maybe some other time. Finally I downloaded a sample, and then I had to buy it. Oswell is not some hack writer who just threw this thing together. It is well thought out, well written, and the author is extremely knowledgeable about both the Zodiac and Unabomber cases; and, more than that, has a keen understanding of criminal psychology. I recommend this book 100% to anyone who, like me, was on the fence about spending the 3 bucks for the Kindle edition.

Do I now believe that TJK was the Zodiac? He is, without a doubt, the best suspect... SO much better than Arthur Leigh Allen, who bestselling true-crime writer Graysmith refuses to give up on. Douglas Oswell points out so many connections between the Zodiac and TJK... writing style, syntax, common phrases, similar handwriting, etc. The skeptic will say that there is no mention of the Zodiac's crimes in any of Kaczynski's writings/journals, and that's true: but Oswell shows you why that makes perfect sense, given TJK's need to portray himself in a certain "positive" light.

I could go on and on, but it's a fascinating read...

Oswell makes a fine stab at trying to show that Ted Kaczynski might be the Zodiac killer. There's a lot that they have in common, but there is a lot that just doesn't match up. First thing, supposedly the DNA on Zodiac envelopes does not match Kaczynski. Second, this is mine, their lower case t's almost rarely seem to match. And Oswell's creepy good evidence is subverted by his weird evidence, like waves and water references. Blah blah blah. Finally, the decoding of the Zodiac ciphers don't quite make sense. But, an interesting read for those interested in either the Zodiac or Kaczynski, just not quite proved.

Yeah, pretty interesting but no cigars. Just can't buy into it. Maybe if DNA (such as it is, from Zodiac) matches Unabomber I'll take it more seriously. But I admit I was hooked on following the book to its logical, twisted, unconvincing end.

This book and This Is The Zodiac Speaking are the only books about the infamous Zodiac killer that are truly worthy of a 5 star rating. (Robert Graysmith's Zodiac is very good as well, although it is does contain some serious mistakes. All other books about Zodiac are pretty much worthless.) Prior to reading this book in its entirety, I thought that the idea that Ted Kaczynski and the Zodiac could be the same person was just ridiculous. However, Douglas Evander Oswell has done a masterful job of presenting a possible (if not highly likely or irrefutable) case against Ted Kaczynski. I am not completely convinced that Kaczynski was the Zodiac, but Oswell has put some major dents in my skepticism. This book is gripping from the first page to the last, and Oswell has written the most in-depth, compelling case against any major Zodiac suspect. All of the books that talk about Arthur Leigh Allen, George Hodel, Earl Van Best and all of the rest as Zodiac pale in comparison. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in true crime.

Excellent research minus sensationalism equals great book

This is an excellent work. The depth of the research is amazing. The author puts together the evidence and facts showing incredible links between the psychology, MO, handwriting, word usage and physical descriptions of the Zodiac Killer and Ted Kaczynski. Forget about the several people falsely claiming their stepdad was the Zodiac, and the fruadulent cases against Allen and Gaikowski.

This book is careful in its approach and conclusions. It never overstates the case. In the end it cannot yet be proven beyond a doubt that Kaczynski was Zodiac, but it is the most convincing case yet, by far. I would urge anyone interested in the Zodiac case and sick of the nonsense to read this book.

A new edition of the book would be great, as a lot of new material on Kaczynski has come out, most of it verifying theories of the author, such as an interest in Wagner, opera, codes and other things.

Thoroughly Fascinating!

All credit to Douglas Evander Oswell. A thorough, meticulous (some would say obsessive) dissertation on what would at first appear to be a somewhat ludicrous proposition. The early chapters are less convincing in terms of Oswell's central idea that these two individuals could be one and the same. Many of the early examples supporting this theory (and Oswell is first to acknowledge that it is indeed simply a theory) do strain credibility and could easily be dismissed as simply coincidence.
However, as the book progresses, all bets are off as more compelling facts and evidence turn this into a classic, thrilling and utterly fascinating story. Without spoiling anything, there is one particular line of logic involving The Zodiac ciphers, Ted Kaczynski's mathematical formulations, and the theory of sets. Stunning!
I highly recommend this book.
