Two cranky guys talk

Full disclosure: I've "known" Alan for several years -- known virtually, that is: I read his blog regularly and follow him on Twitter.

This is a short, immensely readable, sometimes slightly surreal rumination on beer in general and craft beer in particular. Funny, witty, but most important: Smart. The beer geeks will likely get all cranky about it, but Alan and Max are the masters of cranky so, well, the geeks will have to get over it.

Why four stars rather than five? Because Alan and Max decided, bless their cranky hearts, to not proofread this manuscript, and this cranky reader/writer was a tad annoyed by that. But this too will pass.

Meantime: Read it!

If you are the kind of person who takes things very, very seriously, then you will probably hate this book. But then, there is a good chance you are a miserable git, too, so maybe you ought to try to shake the habit- Alan & Max's book could help. Now, if you are a big ol Beer Geek(tm) looking for validation, you really need this more than you know! And if you have no idea what that means, well good for you! But don't take my word for it, just the read the damn book.

A very amusing if highly opinionated assessment of the current state-of-play in the craft beer world. The authors make some very good points in their cranky but humorous way. As someone who blogs, writes, and teaches about craft beer, I can honestly say that this book is a great antidote to taking craft beer too seriously. Cheers!

My advice is to read this along with a decent pint or several , A very unconventional and sometimes laugh out loud look at beer and the craftophile nonsense that sometimes surrounds it , the book ranges from real world opinions about beer good and bad to a sometimes surreal magical realism , in other words ...just like some of the best ,funniest most interesting conversations you have with good friends in the pub after a few good beers have loosened your tongue and brain nicely , This is the only writing about my immortal beloved beverage that connects with me and what I think about beer , entertaining , sometimes serious , but always with a real world fun attitude about beer and the whole culture that surrounds it , and after all ..is,nt drinking beer down the pub with good friends what it,s all about ?
