At the end of every devotion chapter, there are questions for reflection, prayer, scripture for further meditation, journal activity, and a wonderful take-away. For instance, Bell says, “When you do nothing wrong, forgive those who did.”
I admit I often forget that Biblical heroes were real flesh and blood humans like us and that they faced real-life doubts, as we do. God’s promises often did not materialize until years down the road! What would you rather have the world’s definition of success that is measured by fleeting human years, or God’s definition of success that will last an eternity? Get a copy of Unbeaten as a stocking stuffer for your neighbors, friends, and family members. It will be the best gift you could give them!
Open the pages of Unbeaten to learn how we can find strength, growth and fullness in our suffering, how we can take comfort in resting in the arms of the God who loves us more than we can fathom, and how our faith in the midst of pain can take us into a deeper relationship with Him. Do you have doubts? Have you been tempted to fall away? You are not alone. Through her own experiences, Lindsey Bell is well equipped to walk others through the path of grief, urging us to turn to the One who brings us great joy, even in the midst of our sorrow.
This book is a must read for anyone who is struggling, but also for those who have been there, trod that road and now stand ready to assist others who follow behind them. Faith in the Father who brings us hope will let us all emerge 'Unbeaten."
“When we rely on God for the strength to get us through, we can emerge unbeaten.”
When asked if I wanted to join a group to pre-read this bible study, I was initially hesitant. I thought, I haven’t really gone through any major trial in my life; not in comparison to so many others that I know. But I decided to read it anyways; maybe there would be something in it that I could pass on to others who are going through trials. Man, am I glad I did!
Lindsey, having endured her own personal struggle and having emerged unbeaten is able to give a personal touch to the study. You’re not reading a historical account of a bible hero and then being told what to get from the story. Lindsey, in her own voice, makes the story your own or that of your friend or neighbor. She makes it so easy to relate to each of the stories.
Lindsey addresses ten tough spots in life and pairs them beautifully with five examples from the bible. In each short daily devotion she brings the character(s) to life and makes the struggle real. She then aptly points you right back to God and His character.
At the end of each day she offers a few reflection questions, a prayer, a journal activity and additional scriptures for digging deeper. All of the extras are just that – extras. With all of the options you can easily make this devotional as simple or as complex as you want depending on your lifestyle and time available. At the back of the book she offers even more discussion questions that would be great for small groups (or individuals too!).
Overall, I found the book to be thought provoking, easy to understand and very engaging! I would highly recommend this book for every Christian whether you have gone through a trial in your life, are going through a trial, or have yet to go through a trial.
As Max Lucado so aptly said, “God never said the journey would be easy, but he did say that the arrival would be worthwhile.” With the aid of Lindsey Bells’ book Unbeaten, you too can emerge from a trial feeling that it was worthwhile and you are unbeaten.
