Editorial Reviews

Digitally remastered two-fer containing a pair of albums from the R&B vocalist on one disc. Billy Stewart is best known for his distinctive and iconic version of 'Summertime', George Gershwin's standard from Porgy & Bess. 'Summertime', a U.S. Top 10 Pop and R&B hit in the summer of 1966 was the lead track on Billy's Unbelievable' album on Chess, and it is fascinating to hear 'Summertime' in context. Stewart developed his own idiosyncratic 'word-doubling' vocal delivery, and was supported by brassy arrangements combining the best elements of Soul and Big Band Jazz. Also included as bonus tracks are a collection of Billy's Chess recordings from across the 1960s; once released by Chess in 1974 as a compilation called Cross My Heart, which features many Northern Soul favorites. Shout. 2011.

It pains me to say that this cd compilation containing some very fine and rare 1966 to 1970 tracks by Billy Stewart are just too noisy for prime time. I do not understand why a professional music label like RPM, Shout or Universal Music would allow such a shoddy product to wear their label. Most of the old music from Chess records that comes out of England these days on labels like Kent or Edsel is usually remastered very carefully and sound very good. I don't know what happened here with this Billy Stewart stuff, but somebody screwed the sound of this music up. The music itself is excellent but the sound needs to be re-evaluated. The noise here is very ugly.

A brother from Detroit turned me on to UNBLIEVABLE in the Air Force in 1966. I didnt think I would like it, didnt think I would enjoy listening to the old standards. Of course I liked Somertime right away and shortly I was digging on all of the cuts. My vinyl copy is somewhat scratched up and for a long time I was looking for the CD. Billy does a great job on all tracks and the orchestra is right on time.

I still have the vinyl record and was finally able to replace it with the CD. It has an "extra" album that I don't really need to hear, but what the hey.......I enjoy thinking about the good ol' days of Billy Stewart.....
