Well, this is a disturbing blast from the past. I've seen this movie when I was a kid, in fact this was made one year before I was born...creepy. This movie creeped me out as a kid, and watching this again as an adult makes me even more disturbed. While horror movies about killer kids is nothing new, this one goes all out by exploiting the whole controversy about artificial insemination at the time, at least I think it was a controversial topic I may be wrong. There were moments that hit very hard with the subject matter and had some well earned jump scares. However, the mutant baby puppet is too goofy to take serious. Overall this movie is pretty good if you're in the right mood for some early 90's horror, but if you are expecting or planning to get pregnant, you have been warned. Also Lisa Kudrow has a small role in this, which is ironic if you've seen Friends.

I must admit I didn't have high expectations coming into this wicked little film, but after viewing it all I could utter was "damn"! I gave it a whirl because I like the 'screw loose doctor experimenting' movies, and James Karen was just fine in his limited screen time portraying said doctor. The lead actress was also very good albeit her weird facial expressions channeling 'Patrick Swayze in Ghost'. Was also shocked I didn't recognize Kathy Griffith, and didn't even fathom that was her until the closing credits. I can also overlook the 'Male BAD...Female GOOD' overtones that are so prevalent in today's society because I love oddness in my movies, and this film is indeed odd and refreshingly politically incorrect. My grade for this strange little ditty is a very surprising B+!

If you like old horror films, like the ones made by Wes Craven and John Carpenter, you'll easily get hooked as this film manages to build tension as well as unease. Some of the practical effects are indeed a bit dated, but I'm one of those who believe it's part of the charm. It's also worth noting Gary Numan made the soundtrack and it's safe to say he did a great job because the atmosphere is just as creepy as it needs to be. If you're a Numan fan, you'll certainly find that most of it is really reminiscent of his 'Sacrifice' and 'Outland' albums. Overall, this film is what you'd expect from a 1991 horror film made with a tight budget, but I personally found it really entertaining and enjoyable.

On a last note, this DVD sadly does not provide any subtitles so bear that in mind if you have a hearing impairment.

Once the wife, Virginia (played by Brooke Adams) becomes pregnant, she begins to realize that there is something strange about the child she is carrying & that maybe Dr Meyerling has had something to do with it...
B movie horror from the legendary Roger Corman, which has obviously borrowed elements from 'Rosemarys baby' but which really reminds me more so of 'Astronauts wife' only this is more dark & bizarre- esp. once the baby appears on the scene!
Hugely entertaining movie & very underrated. Also features a cameo from a dark haired Lisa Kudrow :)
