Angela seemed to be an interesting character. I liked parts of the story, but did not enjoy some of the
language (I find it unnecessary to tell a story using offensive language). There was WAY too much talk about sex and
sexual references, which had me skipping parts of the story to avoid. When the teen daughter attended
a sex toy party, I didn't think their reaction/actions were very parental. Especially when it lead to sex in a car at the park
with a loser boyfriend, which lead to being grounded, maybe, sorta. Filler, not story.
I skipped through those parts, as I did with Mel, the bff, who had too much of this 'filler' sex stuff in detailing
the cheating husband and younger girlfriend in her part of the
story. So rather than learn about the mysteries Angela helped with, I spent time scrolling past
parts of the book, and trying to pick up the story threads later. It didn't leave me wanting to read more.
Usually secondary characters are not easy to remember or connect with, but Ridder spends a lot of time fleshing out all of her characters and the result is wonderful. Ridder is not just a writer, she is an author. It takes something special to know how to craft a story, a plot, characters and mesh them together to create a really entertaining read. Ridder knows how to spin a yarn, make important connections and top them off with humor. Angela Lansbury (for the quirky mystery and impeccable detecting skills of the protag) meets Bridget Jones (for the hilarious, self aware aspect of the protag). A very fun book and a definite Elite Indie Read.
I can't say enough about the realness of relationships between the characters. I laughed so much at different points at the dialogue, because I could hear it unfolding. I could hear myself or my friends/husband saying it. I could feel it hitting me if I heard my child say it.
The book flows quickly, as Angela encounters a variety of spirits. Friendly and heartbreaking alike. I remember looking at the clock at one point and going oh forget it, who needs sleep and making that decision to just finish the book because it was just that good.
If for some reason this is your first book, go back, read the first one. If you're wondering about the series, wonder no more. Grab this and the first book, Unfinished Business. They're fun, they're great reads. Anymore I wonder what's lurking at Starbucks that I can't see when I sit down with my coffee.
Just like Unbreakable Bonds, Uncharted Territory was an immediate "Buy Now" when I finished this book. I can't wait to see what Carolyn Ridder Aspenson has in store for Angela next!
Angela’s relationship with both her kids and her husband are very endearing to me, as I have kids the same age and the book closely mimics my relationship with not only my husband, but my kids too. My son is my happy place and more often than not my daughter thinks I am the meanest mom around. It lightens my heart to read about the mom/daughter stuff as it makes me feel not so alone in the battle of wills between mom and daughter.
I have been looking forward to book two in the Angela story ever since the finishing the first book. I love how well the author develops not only her characters, but her relationship between the characters. And there is always an adventure when Angela and my ghostly mother are involved. I highly recommend this story to you, and if you have yet to read the first in the series, start there! And please prepare to crave a few cupcakes during your journey!
