Unbreakable (City Lights Book 2) Kindle Edition
THIS BOOK CAN BE READ AS A STANDALONE
Alex Gardener has her life planned out, down to the smallest detail. She has a skyrocketing career as a litigation attorney, a close group of socialite friends, and is engaged to one of the most successful businessmen in Beverly Hills. Everything is just as she wants it: comfortable, predictable, secure...if lacking passion. Fire.
Cory Bishop is a struggling working man, trying to make ends meet while fighting to keep custody his young daughter. He knows that working hard is the only way to achieve his goals, but lately it seems everything he wants hangs just out of reach.
The bank robbery changes everything.
Alex and Cory spend three harrowing days as hostages locked in a bank with fifty frightened people and six criminals who grow more desperate--and dangerous--by the hour. Alex and Cory find comfort and safety with each other and reveal their deepest hopes and fears and secrets, unknowingly building a bond forged out of desperation and fear, one that they can't break, even once outside the bank's walls.
Their lives are turned upside down, irrevocably altered, and they seek to move on and put the robbery--and each other--behind them.
But some bonds, once forged, cannot be broken.Save a Life

Alex is standing in line behind Cory at the bank when there's a armed robbery taking place. Before this happens, they make a little bit of small talk. Cory is living the opposite life of Alex. He's barely making ends meet, he works with his hands rather than behind a desk, and all he wants is to be able to get out of the bank as quickly as possible so he can take care of more pressing business with a strict deadline. Instead, they wind up locked in the bank for the next 1-2 days as hostages under the stress of worrying if they will get out alive. Cory and Alex have already formed a bond with what happened, but to top that off, they are attracted to each other, too.
This kind of traumatic experience can really impact and change a person. Afterwards, Cory and Alex go back to their regular lives but it doesn't feel as normal to them anymore. For starters, Alex is re-evaluating her priorities from every angle. Cory is on the brink of losing everything that has value to him and is in such dire circumstances that Alex may be the only one who can help him. I cannot emphasize how much I loved Cory. He is the kind of person who always strives to do the right thing, has a lot of pride and will give up anything/everything to take care of the people he cares about the most. He doesn't like handouts and he will put his happiness aside for the sake of others. His longing for Alex is quenched by the fact that he feels like he could never provide the type of life she deserves.
I really liked seeing Alex step out of her comfort zone and struggle to decide between the life she was living and the life she wanted to live. Being around Cory gave her a glimpse of the simpler things she could be appreciating and enjoying without the exhaustion of keeping up pretenses or working overtime hours. Alex's character development is more pivotal than Cory's, because Cory stays true to himself throughout the whole book, but Alex is the one who has to have the courage to break the mold and take responsibility for her actions. Her actions will definitely have consequences and when it's all said and done, is it too late to keep her heart from breaking and her life from crumbling apart? Loved this book!
Alexandra Gardener is rich, and a very driven, successful attorney, who is engaged to Drew, a fellow high-roller. They are living together, and after six years it was just “right” for them to get engaged. But as I read, I felt sorry for Alex, because it became clear that nothing was right. Alex and Drew were like platonic friends, a couple who shared the same drive to work and achieve, but nothing else was really right.
Alex was on the treadmill, highballing it in the court room and caught in high flying dreams and the expectations of everyone around her. She had no self-knowledge of her deepest needs. At times she questioned the discrepancies in her relationship with Drew, but didn’t have enough self-confidence to honestly examine them and admit what she really wanted. She was almost like “a lamb being lead to slaughter,” committed to an engagement party, dress fittings and a big wedding that her mother was more interested in than she was. As always, she was too busy with work to deal with something so trivial.
Then she got caught in a bank robbery and horrifying hostage situation, along with many others who just happened to be there at the wrong time, including Cory Bishop.
Cory Bishop was a hunk and I fell in love with him right off the bat. He was flat broke, a laborer, a carpenter who was working to get his CG so he could start a construction company of his own and make his dad proud of him. But Cory was just about everything that a woman dreams of.
And God help them, Cory and Alex connected so strongly during the horrifying hostage situation at the bank, that you couldn’t imagine them not being together. But once they were released, Alex remained committed to an empty marriage.
Emma Scott wove a heart pounding, heart wrenching story and I loved it. I only read when I go to bed, and it took me three nights to read it, but the last night I stayed up until after 1 am to finish it. That is something I seldom ever do, because I am a morning person and wake up before 6 o’clock. The hard part was that I couldn’t quit thinking about the book after I turned the light off.
When I checked on Amazon, I discovered that there are two more books in The City Light’s series. Love Beyond Words (City Lights: San Francisco Book 1) and Rush (City Lights: New York City Book 3) which is available for pre-order now. I will definitely be reading both of them in the future!
How do they both go on with their lives after experiencing such a horrific trauma? It’s far from easy especially when everyone keeps asking the same questions and no one except the two of them knows the answers to those questions.
Unbreakable is a fabulous and intense friends to lovers romance. Alex and Cory are two amazing characters. They come from opposite worlds but still work as a couple. The connection they form is immediate and undeniable and so is the chemistry.
Cory is such a great guy and a wonderful father to his girl Callie. Wanting only the best for her. Alex is a shark of woman when it comes to her job as a lawyer. She excels at it.
When Cory and Alex tries to find a new normalcy it doesn’t come easy to them. The only thing that does is them being around one another. One way or another. It’s a struggle when they both have obligations to other people and when especially Alex is used to living a certain way it’s not easy to break away.
Those struggles are depicted with a heartfelt honesty and something that I could easily understand. It’s a roller coaster of emotions and two people who just want to let go and be with one another. Damn the consequences. The epilogues are terrific and gave me the perfect closure.

At the beginning of this story, I met Alex, a hardworking lawyer who enjoyed the finer things in life. Engaged to a man who was very similar to Alex, with a life that was focused around their career and not much else. Alex's relationship just didn’t seem to involve any love or passion, and I soon learned that she was missing out on so much heat, desire and excitement. Pretty much all the essential ingredients for a long lasting marriage. Alex’s life, although seeming full and rich, deep down it really wasn’t. But then not long into the story, something happened that changed everything for Alex. She met Cory, who was the game changer of the tale.
The story that continued was one that was filled with fire and passion. Everything that Alex had been missing in her life. It also contained a whole lot of soul searching. I loved seeing Cory and Alex together and rooted for their relationship to work. I willed for Alex to realise that Cory was her true soulmate, to appreciate that he was the only man that could make her happy. At times I became frustrated with her actions and felt sorry for Cory for the way that he was being treated, but it was all worthwhile in the end. The romance that played out was a love that gave me so much joy. I was so damn happy for the couple. The pair were made for one another and Cory was so gorgeous. Handsome, rugged with a heart as big as the ocean. He was the true hero of the story in every sense of the word. Saving Alex in so many different ways. He deserved a happy life full of love with Alex by his side.
This book was well worth the read and one that I recommended adding to your TBR. Cory and Alex’s tale was all about taking chances and realising what you need to make you happy. Life is way too short. Find the love that you deserve. Don’t settle for second best.
