Editorial Reviews

Uncanny Magazine is a multiple Hugo Award winning online Science Fiction and Fantasy magazine featuring passionate SF/F fiction and poetry, gorgeous prose, provocative nonfiction, and a deep investment in the diverse SF/F culture. Each issue contains intricate, experimental stories and poems with verve and imagination that elicit strong emotions and challenge beliefs from writers from every conceivable background. Uncanny believes there's still plenty of room in the genre for tales that make you feel.

Co-edited by Hugo Award-winners Lynne M. Thomas and Michael Damian Thomas, each issue contains new and classic speculative fiction, podcasts, poetry, essays, art, and interviews. Uncanny's contributors range from the award-winning leading voices of the field to exciting, emerging talents.

Uncanny issues are published bimonthly on the first Tuesday of that month. Each issue contains 5-6 new short stories, 1 reprinted story, 3 poems, 4 nonfiction essays, and 2 interviews, at minimum.

I’m a subscriber & always look forward to each issue. Eclectic stories & articles, well-curated & insightfully edited. A great place to find new authors & commune with favorites. Artwork is outstanding.

Every story or essay I have read so far has been amazing! I have been thrilled by the new ideas, the attention to social and emotional growth, and the overall quality of this publication. I'm very excited to see what comes out next!

This magazine is full of interesting speculative fiction, curated and presented well. A 21st-century update if the classic SF magazines. I’ve enjoyed reading it on the train during my commutes, as well as at home.

However, Uncanny recently changed from a flexible ebook format to a fixed graphic format. This change makes it very difficult to read on a phone. The previous format gave the reader full control over font size, now it is forced into a fixed size. It can really only be read on a large device. This is a big step backwards.

I do not plan to renew my subscription until Uncanny Magazine returns to a flexible ebook layout.

I was disappointed in the issue that I got with the free 30-day trial. No fiction in it!

Do you want to read some of the best speculative short fiction currently being written? Well, this is is a great place to start! Uncanny has a knack for finding authors and stories that really speak to the condition of humanity through the fantastic. More than worth your time.

I love this periodical! First of all, the cover art always sucks me in. The images are beautiful and evocative, and I even know some of the artists, which is so cool! This is great for my monthly fix of sf/f because I don't have the time to read a lot of novels in these genres, and I never go out searching for poetry in these genres. Now I don't have to. Uncanny sends it to me. It's a good mix of authors I know and love, and people I've never read from before, and I like the idea that there are some "unknowns" published here, because it means I have a chance to be published in Uncanny some day. Considering I re-read a lot of these stories, the price is great, so I just decided to subscribe for the next year. I hope the magazine has gotten enough subscribers to continue indefinitely, and I will recommend it to all my sf/f loving friends.

The quality of the writing is consistently good, and mostly unique. For writers in the sf/f genres, I think subscribing to the magazine is a wise choice, as it inspires you to write more, and gives you new ideas. I'd give Uncanny overall a 4.5 star rating, and I bet I'll be a fan for quite a long time.

Got this as a free trial and although the fiction stories were very good, there was not many of them and a lot of non- fiction that doesn't interest me.
