This volume is where everything starts to fall apart for the X-force. After the apocalypse issue and mishaps in the Otherworld, the x-force starts to recollect themselves about why they are in the x-force in the first place (even deadpool). This contains violence and gritty drama as expected from Rick Remender. With twists and turns, this book leaves you longing for more.
The only reason this collection does not receive my consent of 5 star is because of the artwork. Don't get me wrong, the art is great, but it just doesn't live up to the expectations from the past volumes. Opena did such great work with Apocalypse solution and the dark angel saga that I just couldn't bring myself to fully appreciate the work that the different artists did throughout the book.
Just a little note... if you really want to learn about Deadpool's reason for why he is in the x-force, you guys should start collecting the Deadpool collections by Daniel Way. I really liked how Remender inserted that little tidbit, because as a long avid Deadpool fan, I had a little fangasm in that one panel. Rule #32 - Enjoy the little things.
This novel along with Uncanny X-Force: Final Execution - Book 2 will comprise the final arc of what was a watershed series for Marvel's mutants. The Uncanny X-Force was at once a brilliant series with beautiful art as well as gritty: truly a "mature" series in the best sense of the word.
Daken restarts the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants (with Mystique, Sabertooth, Skinless man, Blob, Shadow King, and the Omega clan) with the express purpose of wiping out X-Force. In an all out assault, the Brotherhood shakes X-Force to their core. Before the Brotherhood can massacre everyone, Gateway teleports the team to an alternate timeline (where the X-Force policy of permanently ending threats before they happen is policy--and the innocent are hunted for their possibility of becoming criminals). The morally fraught position that X-Force has staked out is brought into question. For Psylocke this ethical dilemma can only be solved by revoking the X-Force license to kill.
In the issues collected here X-Force begins to unwind as Psylocke announces that she can no longer be a killer. But bringing closure to Wolverine's secret group of assassins is not that simple. Rick Remender with a collection of fantastic artists (Mike McKone, Phil Noto, and Julian Tedesco) crafts some brutally memorable moments. From a puss-filled Wolverine to a skin-collecting judge to the brilliant re-interpretation of the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, this collection offers reader a lot.
While I am sad to see Uncanny X-Force begin its final story, I am glad that the series will end while it is still strong. A second Uncanny X-Force series begins with Uncanny X-Force - Volume 1: Bishop Takes Queen (Marvel Now) (Uncanny X-Force - Marvel Now) . My fingers are crossed: this series has big shoes to fill!
