Ashe Carver is having a difficult time adjusting to normal life. Her former job as supernatural assassin was full of danger and excitement. To keep her daughter, Eden, safe, she retired from hunting and started a new life as a library clerk and full-time mom. Unfortunately, the past refuses to die.
She's brought in to investigate a paranormal attack and comes face to face with two very dangerous beings: a demonic bunny rabbit and Reynard, captain of the Castle guards. The last time she saw Reynard, he was bleeding in her arms, near death. Seeing him again affects her just as deeply but in a less maternal and more hungry manner. She's been with men since her husband died but she hasn't allowed herself to care about any of them. Reynard threatens to be the man who finally breaks through her resolve...if they can keep each other alive.
Unchained by Sharon Ashwood is everything I'd expect from a kickass paranormal romance and more. The romance builds slowly, teasing you with possibilities, making you wonder if they'll ever let themselves go and be together. Ashe is such an amazing heroine, I couldn't help but love her. Her past is rough and full of attacks on her heart, and she's become bitter through the years but she's willing to change for those she loves.
Captain Reynard has been one of my favorite side characters since he showed up in Ravenous, so I was beyond excited to find out he was getting his own book. He's big, noble, and tattooed--characteristics I ALWAYS appreciate. He's also good with kids, flirty when out of the Castle, and rough when it counts. He is the perfect partner for Ashe, who needs someone strong enough to keep her from doing something stupid but soft enough to love her the way she needs to be loved.
There are no true villains in Unchained, just different species struggling with their own natures. Tony, the demon Ashe and Reynard must fight, can't help his nature anymore than Miru-kai, the prince of the dark fey whose machinations set everything in motion, can fight his. This duality of evil without truly being evil is one of the best parts of The Dark Forgotten series. Even though I wanted to despise Tony and Prince Miru-kai, I couldn't - in fact, I hope Miru-kai gets his own story.
Ashwood is one of those writers worth watching. This story of Ashe, a magic-less witch / slayer / mom and Reynard, a hunky guard at a castle that imprisons supernatural bad guys who gets his soul stolen. Lots of nefarious characters sprinkled throughout this tale make a delightful read. If you love paranormal romance with an action packed twist, you'll love this one.
Keep in mind that this is a fun fantasy read. 5* of 5*
I absolutely loved this book! It was exciting, creative, mysterious and full of action. The story kept my interest and attention to point that I didn't want to put it down. There are romantic elements to this story but Sharon tells it in such a way that you actually want to get invested and see what happens next to the heroine. Ash Carver is a kick-butt heroine and I'd love to see more of her in the future.
I highly recommend this book to fellow dark urban fantasy readers and I anxiously await the next book in the series Iced. For those who are wondering what genre this series falls into, I would categorize it as dark romantic urban fantasy.
I also recommend:

Captain Reynard is the Captain of the guardsmen of the Castle; a prison for monsters. He's been there hundreds of years, and his duty ends only when he is killed or the magic of the castle prison winds down. He gets to venture out into the real world time to time, to capture escaped prisoners.
But when a thief steals Captain Reynard's soul, he knows time is of the essence. He knows he has only weeks to live, and he deplores Ashe to help him find the thief and his soul. Ashe is trying to live without the monsters, but Captain Reynard is just too good looking for Ashe to ignore. His gaze alone sets her belly afire. The two embark on a journey of action, monsters, romance, and humor that intensifies until a most satisfying storyline.
UNCHAINED, BOOK 3, THE DARK FORGOTTEN is a fast-paced urban fantasy that will keep you hooked from cover to cover. Ms. Ashwood's characters leap from the pages, the romance is hot and passionate, and the monsters make me want to check under my bed. Superb and highly recommended!
