I was worried about Uncharted 4 as I felt that the game would not live up to the hype. A new long lost brother an older Drake I was very skeptical and had reservations. I happily admit I was very wrong out the game. Uncharted 4 blew my reservations out of the water as its one of the best-uncharted games in the series. With a new focus of more exploration and character building this game feels like the old PS1 Tomb Raider games. Nathan has never been more humanized with beginning showing him live a regular life in New Orleans. As a someone who has played all the games including the one in PS Vita it was a breathe of fresh air. However Nate’s life takes on an adventure as his thought to be long dead brother shows up and the quest to find Henry Avery’s treasure begins.
The graphics in this game are insane. I have never seen a good looking in this generation. From life like facial animation, character models, and environments the game is well detailed. The frame rate dips a bite when too much is going on but it isn’t to bad and it keeps its 30 frames. The multiplayer runs at a smooth 60 frames. Which is a must for competitive play. All and all I can say this without any debate that this is the best looking game for the PS4. I can look at this game all day and still be amazed especially that dynamic lighting. Voice acting is top notch Nolan North returns to the role of Nathan Drake and does an amazing last performance. Troy Baker joins to play his older brother Sam and the pair work well. The two definitively have great chemistry a must for any duo-focused narrative.
The gameplay is all and good you have you standard uncharted gameplay elements with an edition of a grapple hook which makes for fun take downs. There is also stealth gameplay in most sections, although basic you can play as a ghost taking out most of enemies without being seen. It wouldn’t be an uncharted game without those fast moving set pieces without spoilers. It is truly memorable joining the ranks of the plane and train scenes from there predecessors. The shooting is the best the franchise has seen but the melee combat seems worse than before. The punches don’t seem to connect like they did in Uncharted 3 and they changed something that was already perfect. Aside from that the gameplay is the best in the franchise and definitely the most variable in the series.
Uncharted 4 is not perfect as it has shortcomings such as micro-transaction in its multiplayer component. Micro transactions are official the standard in full price game which sucks. As mention before dips in frame rate and unnecessary change in melee combat. Nothing major but it still needs to be mentioned. Also if you don’t like narrative driven games with lots of cinematic this game isn’t for you. It's not Metal Gear Solid 4 but there are quite a lot of cut scenes especially in the beginning. I personally don’t mind but some gamers do so this is a disclaimer.
As this is the special addition it comes with an exclusive steel book cover and a 49-page art book. The art book is pretty cool seeing the planning of the environments you explore in game. The steel book is amazing as it gives you a different cover and a better-looking one at that. You also get more Uncharted point the Micro Transactions for the cosmetics in multiplayer. The multiplayer is fun I definitely see a live community for it. It takes a more supernatural approach so you can get powers in a multiplayer game on top of the movement and climbing Uncharted is known for. Making for really addictive matches definitely not an unnecessary add on like most single player focus games.
In conclusion Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End is one of the best games of 2016. The game ends Nathan Drake’s story beautifully and if this is the last Uncharted game it’s a hell of a way to go. The game is 12-15 hours long plus a really good multiplayer. Naughty Dog has done again with this near perfect game.
I also purchased the remastered trilogy prior to playing this and I am glad I did. Nathan Drake (Main Character) references his past adventures at several points during the game and it was nice to know exactly what was being referred to in those moments.
It was also very nice to see the game dive into Nathan's past to see how he got his start in being the Indiana Jones video game counterpart.
Overall I was very impressed with this game. The graphics and level of detail that went into this game is unmatched by any of the precious games. This detail is present throughout the game, whether in cut-scenes between objectives or just exploring the world.
The story in this game is very well written and when each act leaves you begging for more or on the edge of your seat. I cannot stress enough how amazing some of the levels are in this game and how many amazing missions you get to play.
The sound effects are equally captivating. Anything from the faintest footsteps, to gun fire are clear and well pronounced. The voice actors also did an incredible job and really brought their character to life.
Also don't worry about this game being only a first person shooter, although there is plenty of that. Many levels offer puzzles and stealth activities that truly test ones ability to think outside the box on how to get past certain points.
Mulitplayer also exists and offers hours more to the game. The game-play is similar to past games, team deathmatch style where you try and eliminate the opposing players with your arsenal of fire arms and special abilities. The ability to unlock treasure chests from the game offers new outfits to many current and past game characters so you can truly stand out when playing online. For those who wish there is also an in game store to buy more items and unlocks for your character.
As far as getting the special addition, I only did so because my prime membership offers 15% off new video games so it made it slightly less then going to an average store to buy the game at 59.99. The special edition however does come with an exclusive steel book for the game which reminds me more of a graphic novel style cover and 49-page art book. The art book contains all art aspects that went into the game including characters, weapons, and locations within the game itself.
You also get more uncharted points to be used when playing online to customize your character. Unless you are a major Uncharted series fan or collector than there is really no need to spend the extra money for this version.
Overall this is one of the best games I have been able to play on the PlayStation 4 and is one of the best games of 2016 hands down, hats off to you Naughty Dog.
I can only hope they make an Uncharted 5 so I can spend several more hours playing one of the best video game franchises in recent memory.
