A Little About Fireflies
Fireflies, also known as lightening bugs, are pretty cool creatures. These bugs give off a bioluminescent light from their abdomen. You usually only see these bugs at night because fireflies like to stay on the ground during the daylight hours. There are estimated to be 2,000 different species of fireflies around the world and they generally found in areas where the difference between the temperatures each seasons isn’t too drastic. The lifespan of an adult firefly is about two months long.

I think that in my mind, I had visions of a new night light for the room. In that respect, I was disappointed, as this thing puts out very little light. The bugs themselves are random in their blinking pattern, and it is actually pretty convincing. That said, only one bug lights at a time, and it is pretty dim. I suspect that if I had read the description a little better, I would have realized that, but it really isn't a big deal.
Upon seeing it, my four-year old's first utterance was "this is boring." I prefer "tranquil", but to each his own. I must admit, it isn't terribly exciting to watch, but then again, neither are fireflies. Both boys have actually grown to rather like it, but it really is more of a cool room addition than anything practical. If you are looking for a real night light, please take my word for it; this isn't it. Overall, I suppose I would recommend it, but keep in mind its limitations.
1. I used a glue gun to attach the little fireflies to the leaves. It comes with double sided sticky foam that is just terrible. Since I have it over a crib, I wanted to mitigate the whole chocking hazard risk.
2. Mine will randomly turn on by itself all the time. I really don't mind. However, it does wear the batteries down faster.
3. The remote clicky is surprisingly loud. I have to muffle the sound so it won't wake up baby when I turn it off.
That said, I think this is a really cool addition to a room. It ended up being bigger than I expected, which was a nice surprise. This item is featured on Think Geek and is way overpriced on their website (around $35). I think I got a new but opened one on here for around $7. I'd pay up to $25 for it.
I really like this thing a lot. The coloring of the leaves is awesome (lighter green and yellowish accents). The LED lights are a nice touch. They connect between them and the leaves seem pretty solid contrary to what people claimed (and trust me, I was swing them all around to try and get them installed properly on my overheard...side to side...upside down....everything, and none of them even so much as came a little loose). The bugs have nice detail as well. And the LED lights are definitely not going to light up the whole room, but it does light up enough so I can see parts of the leaves which makes it look mega awesome with the lights fully off.
That being said, this thing is not without issue.
First and foremost being set up. This thing is not difficult, per say, to set up. But overall took quite some time. Mostly due to design choices they made.
I don’t see why they decided to go with the ‘screw on, screw off’ battery covers. These are always mega annoying. The main compantment is covered by the mounting plate, so I don’t see why they need to be screwed on. No kids are going to be getting at it if its on the ceiling and secured to the plate. I winded up just leaving the battery cover off for easier access when replacing batteries. The remote itself, however, I do not have a choice. I always have to reach for a screw driver. But im guessing the remote batteries will last pretty long, so its not as bad.
By design, the LED lights will automatically turn off after 30 minutes. They definitely designed this thing for kids in mind, but it would have been nice for it to have an option to leave on until you actually want to shut it off. Not a huge problem though.
The leaves hang straight down. This is good if you have it hung high up, and more close to being directly above you. But as I mentioned, I have it hanging lower, above my desk, and more in front of me. This means I cant even see the beautiful leaves for the most part. To remedy this, I used some shipping tape to tape the leaves at an angle (facing me), taping the back of the leaves against the LED wires that hold the leaves. It would have been cool if the back of the leaves had clips installed to do this, considering not everyone is going to install these things right above their heads.
And the biggest wonderment of all…….the bugs. The stickers they come with seem like they will hold pretty well…but definitely not forever. Especially if you have to keep fusing with the item to replace batteries every so often. Its beyong me why they didn’t use a snap on design like they did with the LED lights, or why they weren’t just permanently molded to the leaves themselves. It would save everyone some set up time, and grief later on.
Overall, this is a great product that was worth the $10 bucks I paid for it. If I paid $25 like when I originally had it on my wish list I might have gave it a side eye glance, but still would have liked it for what it is and does.
Also, I have it installed closer to the wall than the 20inches away they recommend. It actually helped because some of the leaves are against the wall which keeps them at an angle facing towards me (I didn’t have to use shipping tape on those ones
Hope this review helps.
