All Souls' Day, the day after All Saints' Day -- or All Hallows' Day, which is the day that begins at midnight when Halloween ends -- is a Christian feast day that for some reason I learned little about as a Catholic school girl, only that it was a special day to pray for the dead, the "poor souls in Purgatory." It occurs very near the Celtic solar festival of Samhain, the midpoint between the autumnal equinox and the winter solstice. Like most solar feasts, fire is involved... the fires in jack-o-lanterns, in this case. It is a festival of death, as the sun begins its journey down the last quarter of the sky and the powers of night and darkness grow stronger. It's associated with Guy Fawkes Day, and with the Day of the Dead in some countries. "Uncle Vernon" is set in a spooky old house, on Halloween, with the powers of darkness definitely in evidence. It prompted me to investigate the origins of All Souls' Day and also reminded me of a favorite song from the 1960s, Peter, Paul, and Mary's A-Soulin.
The family living in the house in question is an interesting bunch, even apart from Uncle Vernon. They're portrayed with Jenny Twist's usual economy, and in her skillful hands they become attractive and real and really strange in a few short pages. I want to know them better!
Finally, one of the best things about this story... or at least I like it best... is that the events can be taken as supernatural or entirely realistic. I love this kind of ambiguity.
A definite must-read. You don't even need to wait for next Halloween! There's no time like the present. After all, if you delay, Uncle Vernon may come calling before you get around to reading about him! Then you'll be sorry.
I cannot say much more about this story but I will say that it would be a perfect read at a campsite. Additionally, it would make a great short movie. It is like viewing an episode of one of the old Twilight Zone T.V. series. Once again, Jenny Twist proves just how talented she is. If you are interested in a quick Holloween read (25 pages), "Uncle Vernon" will definitely fit the bill.
Alison spends a weekend with her boyfriend Gary. Gary’s family is eccentric especially his Uncle Vernon. He only comes to visit at Halloween and he spends most of his time in the cellar. Nobody knows what he does down there. Alison is about to discover the most spooky and bizarre weekend of her life.
A fun and spooky short story. Uncle Vernon is odd and eccentric, waiting to see what his "big secret is" was fun to read. I liked How Gary just accepted his family (eccentric) yet normal to him.
I feel that lovers of Halloween/Horror/Bizarre stories will enjoy Uncle Vernon. I also enjoyed Disappeared and plan on reading more work by Jenny Twist.
Although it is a short story, I really came to like Alison, Gary and his family. Granny and her eating habits added humor to an otherwise eerie story. Hmm, umm, about Uncle Vernon, just the description of him was creepy!
This is a perfect scary story to read at Halloween or when you want a quick spooky read. I highly recommend that you read it to find out more about Uncle Vernon!
