About the Author
Brent Bogan is the founder of the popular professional development company, Unconventional Teaching (www.UnconventionalTeaching.com). Unconventional Teaching workshops specialize in topics such as classroom management, assessment strategies, the flipped classroom/education technology, and creating entertaining and memorable lessons for students. At the end of each chapter, there is an action step that you can try in your own class. I have already tried a few of them and I'm impressed with the results I've had. Classroom management is an evolving concept for teachers and the ideas in this book are perfect for the students I teach, who think they're "too cool for school."
Each year, my school receives PDUs for participating in a book club and two of us from the middle school where I work have convinced others here at our school to read this as one of our summer reads.
I absolutely loved the workshop. The same humor that they had at the workshop, shined through in the book as well. I especially enjoyed the Espanto candy story. While a good majority of the book displayed ways to reward students, there were several examples of how students need to have an intrinsic value towards learning and good behavior. I cannot wait to read their next book, I remember them mentioning their next book coming out soon at the workshop, although I couldn't find anything about the book on their website. If you want a refreshing summer read to prepare you for next school year, this is your book.
The authors do present some novel ideas to increase student engagement, such as the use of video games, magic tricks, and other games to present in the classroom. However, they offer no clear cut guidance on actual behavioral management techniques. The overall sense I got from reading this book is that students will behave better if they are entertained, which is indeed true, but calling these tactics "classroom management" is a stretch at best.
