Excellent history expressed in a masterful story

The oppression of the Finnish tenant farmers prior to WWI [which ultimately led to a Civil War in that country just after the Bolshevik revolution in Russia] tends to be glossed over in accounts of that period. The conditions were similar to those endured by the Russian peasants which ultimately led to 80 years of communist misery in Russia. Finland, on the other hand, managed to triumph with a democratic government. One could go read this history by events, i.e strikes, skirmishes, legislation but it is infinitely more compelling to read and understand the history in this book, from the view of a fictional community in southern Finland. The author has done a fabulous job reporting history accurately while weaving the fiction in. Unlike many historical fiction books, the characters are believable in the period, rather than expressing contemporary sentiments in a historical setting.The notes say that this is the definitive book to understand recent Finn history and I enthusiastically agree. Incidentally this is book 1 of 3. I have just finished the second book [Under the North Star 2] which continues the story of this family through the Civil War and I recommend that one also.

Insight into Finnish country life

This book is, apparently, a Finnish classic and, indeed, it is worth reading. Importantly it gives a very good insight into the rural peasant scene at the turn of last century. The characters are well drawn and the political significance of the time is craftily woven into the story. To really appreciate this book, and the context in which it was written, requires a fairly good understanding and knowledge of Finland today. For example, the fact that the rural upper class landowners spoke Swedish and had difficulty communicating with the general rural population speaking Finnish is significant. As I am learning Finnish I wanted to read some of the Finnish classics and this book, while different, was a good start. The translation appears to be very good and the story flows well. I would recommend this book - particularly to those with some understanding of Finland, its history and its culture.

Brilliant first part of a trilogy showing, through a well written and well developed story, the background to Finland's emergence as in independent state. Put like that it doesn't sound too interesting but if you worked your way through the big Russian novels you;ll love this one
