Now onto the story ... After I read the 1st book in the series I thought, "okay, light and kind of chick flicky but maybe as the series develops, our gal will grow a pair and leave her EEEEK factor behind." Nope, not happening. I constantly want to kick Sophie in the butt and tell her to lose the bewildered, helpless schpeel. It is old and boring. This gal is NOT empowered. Grandma showing up in the mirrors (or any shiny surface, including a fruit spoon ...) is lame. Seriously! I loved my grandmothers to death and they were awesome, fearless women - I was ashamed of Sophie's grandmother spending wasted moments bitching about Sophie's lack of housekeeping skills. Boring. I don't like Nina ... Alex is a weenie and that whole game of lusting after him is boooooorrrrrring - Hello, he has mind reading skills - can you say fallen angel? Obviously he can manipulate Sophie's lust factor and knows the intimate details of her erotic musings blah blah blah. Tired, boring, old! Throw the girl a bone will you? While you are at it, give her a makeover and some balls to boot.
This book is NOT urban fantasy - you know, gritty, real, street fighting, in-your-face butt whomping! Nope. Roomie Nina is a ... well she is the WORST kind of friend - willing to push aside her bestie for a long pair of fangs! Pathetic ... I've dumped g-friends for doing that and never went back! Vlad is an annoying vamp frozen @ 16 but really over 100 years old and clearly learned NOTHING in life. He is stuck in hormone, angstville and he is boring as well. Sophie needs to graduate from an "Administrative Assistant" whose work purpose in life is a glorified file clerk and a NOT SO FUNNY (sorry) twit. I am tired of reading about this perpetual victim - life is tough enough and I am looking for vicarious butt whomping, save the day ... the world ... or at least the dog.
Sophie needs a purpose, determination, and to fulfill her potential. Give her a MISSION STATEMENT for God's sake. Do you hear that Jayne?? You have a lot of potential with this gal and the story so get cracking to give this girl some gumption and some dark, esoteric and INTERESTING traits and something meaningful to do. BTW ... the DAD factor (I won't spoil it) is handled REALLY poorly. I mean seriously - the Dad factor is a HUGE deal and it is treated like, 'huh will you look at that ... daddy dearest is xxxxx.' There is understated and there is just bad writing and blowing off an AWESOME opportunity for further development. Same said for the other characters in these books. They are all lacking - no substance or depth. Too bad you've written the other books already - I won't likely read them. I gave 2 a chance and I'm moving on.
So... for you readers, if you are looking for what equates to a tweeny bopper, fluffy, sort of giggly ride - this is your book ... series I suppose.
This book is just as funny as the last. Sophie loses her job, Nina falls in love, Sophie gets a new dangerous job at a crummy clothing store, Sophie burns down said store, and Sophie kills her half sister. All in a week's worth!
The main problem I have is that the whole Sampson story hasn't been resolved. The end of the first book had him running away and Alex giving Sophie some info from Sampson. The second book has Sampson being declared dead, end of story. How do they know he is dead? What about the pack of papers that were given to sophie?
Also, what about Sophie dad? Hopefully these issues get solved in the next one.
Barely there cussing and no sex but plenty of hotties and a ton of riotous laughter to be had! Hannah Jayne has a great sense of humor and I love her writing style!
If you want a serious kick-ass book this is not the one for you.
The series is entertaining fluff with just enough drama to keep you going.
I'd compare it to Darynda Jones' "First Grave on the Right," only not as funny... or sexay... or deep.
The characters you meet in this book are fabulous and quirky, I love the humor and the oddness of the world that the author has created, it's not everyday you get a visit from a dead relative in a shiny piece of fruit. The authors imagination and sense of humor make this a great read I can't wait for the next addition to this series.
