Felice populates all of her books with real people, and “Under the Boardwalk” is no exception.
Alexi is the son of Russian immigrants, stuck in old-world values. Somewhat naïve, he hasn’t come out to his family for fear that those old-world values would force his family to reject him. Stuck working at his families custard stand on The Boardwalk, he has dreamed of leaving New York and traveling the world, but the crushing sense of responsibility to his family has kept him where he is.
Cam is just the opposite. A musician by training, he spends his summer days singing on The Boardwalk. BHis parents not only know of his sexuality, but are fully supportive of him. Giving up the fast-paced lifestyle of the city, his parents have instead moved to a remote cabin. Cam himself is a world traveler. Don’t be fooled, however. Cam has had his share of setbacks, including a medical scare.
Alexi and Cam are truly sweet together, each recognizing in the other qualities that, when put together, have the potential to create a truly dynamic couple. The differences the two create the perfect environment for not only conflict but also mutual support. Alexi’s wanderlust and Cam’s medical condition can either serve to bring the couple closer together, or tear them apart.
This book is an perfect addition to the series!
Felice Stevens brought that dream back to life with Cam and Alexi's story. From the moment I started reading, I was no longer on my couch at home. I was right there in Coney Island watching these boys fall in love. I was surrounded by the salty sea breeze, the smell of hot dogs and fried dough and the screams of riders on the Cyclone. I was right there with Alexi doling out cones of custard, listening to Cam's beautiful songs and sneaking peeks of him when no one was watching. When I connect with a book like that, it instantly becomes a favorite.
Cam and Alexi are absolutely one of the sweetest couples I’ve read. They are really adorable together. I loved that they had fun together…stealing kisses under the boardwalk, eating hot dogs at Nathan’s and riding the rides. Unfortunately, they each have to face some very real issues that packed quite an emotional punch. I’m actually glad that they did. Having real life intrude on their happiness solidified them as a couple and made them more than just a summer fling.
Alexi and Cam a very sweet couple have been attracted to each other over the last two summers . Both boys face uphill battles Alexi has kept himself in the closet too afraid of what his very traditional immigrant family would say and Cam he faces a very daunting issue of not being able to do what he loves most .
Both boys find their way to each other and together they conquer their demons to get to their happy place.
A beautiful sweet non angst read !
