This was my first experience reading a romance with a suspenseful theme, so I was pretty apprehensive when I started to read it. The blurb describing the book was very intriguing and was the key factor in my final decision. By the end of the story, I was a firm believer in the power of a well-written blurb because I would have totally missed reading something that thrilled me with its action and moved me with the depth of emotion found in its characters and the journey of a couple that had to go through the pain of separation and betrayal only to find themselves come a full circle.

The author did an incredible job in writing a story that held me firmly in its grip. I loved the pacing of the book because it gave me the opportunity to enjoy what I was reading and the time to picture in my mind everything that was happening. What I especially appreciated was the way she put the story together because it felt as though it was two books in one.

The first part had me following Beth, the lead reporter of her small town paper as she tried to uncover the truth behind a series of disappearances and discovery of ritualistic altars. It placed me straight in the middle of conflict and as the story progressed and tension built, I was totally hooked on knowing who was behind it all. The implication that Ethan, the potential love interest for Beth, was involved lead to some interesting scenes and I loved the excitement it had me feeling.

The second part of the book was what really touched my heart and moved me at one point to tears. Without giving too much away, it tells of Beth's journey to recover from the trauma of earlier events and her struggle to repair the damage to her spirit.

First off, I think this book has a lot going for it. I really enjoy a good suspense, romance...and this one seemed to fall a little short. It's like this...imagine yourself at a firework show. The first ten minutes are good, then it seems as if the finale is coming. BOOM BOOM BOOM...lots of excitement and you're loving it, but you know there's a while before the show's going to end. Then the fireworks dwindle down to just one piddly firework at a time. After another ten minutes there's one last firework that's slightly louder than the rest and...it's over.

First, the good...I liked the basic story of Beth as a journalist for a small-town paper with the strange going-on's. The tense relationship between her and Ethan was intriguing, and I loved the family dynamic within Beth's family. I appreciate that it was a pretty "clean" novel, not just with the serial killer, but also in the romance. Everything was spelled out, but not in the raunchy detail I've found in other novels (and it could have been considering the killer's tactics). And the author did well to draw me into the story, but...

The bad...I think the author may have lost their way while writing this one. Looking at the book as a whole, there wasn't a good balance of suspense and the love story. After the first half of the story the suspense (at least for me) all but vanished. The author did well to build up an interesting villain with an intriguing motivation, and I was really excited to see how that part of the story would develop. Instead, the villain was dropped from the story and it turns into Beth's emotional journey to find herself again, with a mini-villain of sorts sprinkled in. I wish the novel description would have made reference to Beth's recovery being such a big part of the story.

Under The Moon's Shadow is the Empire Strikes Back of second novels. Darker, grittier and more disturbing than Secrets In The Shadows. If the first twenty pages don't have you hooked you're not a mystery lover. I could go on but I don't want to ruin anything for the reader, you need to experiance this great story on your own. The ending will kick you in your...well wherever. T.L.Haddix does it again and I can't wait for the third book. I like it dark.

Under The Moon's Shadow by T.L. Haddix, Book Two in the Leroy's Sins series....ohhh, it was just what I had hoped it would be. After the first book, I looked so forward to the second, and it did not disappoint! I flowed right through it, not able to stop reading, and now I cannot wait for Book Three. You get to know the people of Leroy. They become your friends, your neighbors. Heck, you feel like you live in Leroy! I think this series is going to take off and become very popular! Well done, T.L.

This was like a two part book. Suspense and mystery was part one, recovery and romance part two. I'm not used to that way of writing but that's just me. The suspense part was pretty good with lots of twists and some strange things going on but the mystery part was revealed early on which left me wondering what the rest of the book was about. Second part felt like lots of filler with the thoughts of the characters, which would normally be okay, but not that much.

Beth's family was funny, serious, caring and had a normal sounding relationship. There were quite a few errors that should have been caught by an editor. I wouldn't not recommend the book, but it could have been so much more.
