Christie spent years building close, often difficult, and deeply personal relationships with a community of Tanzanian stowaways living in Cape Town. He also spent time in Tanzania with his subjects, traveling with them overland back to South Africa, at no small risk to his own safety. Through his incredible access and compelling writing the details of their lives, how they came to be where/who they are and the logic of the world in which they operate are revealed. Many touching, entertaining, tragic, but often humorous stories are beautifully strung together so the reader feels like they have a personal connection to the characters but also a broader understanding of the historical and structural forces that shape them. Written with frankness, humility and insight.

Written with enormous emotional insight, and opening up a world few middle-class readers would have imagined they could enter and even at times understand. I have rarely been so surprised by a book. Highly recommended.

This exceptional piece of investigative journalism takes the reader into the world of Tanzanian stowaways: at times harsh and desperate, at times heartwarming. The author immersed himself into this subculture and returned with a fascinating story to tell.

Wonderful informed gritty adventure

My Amazon review of Sean's book: To read a book where a writer of Christie's quality has gone to these extraordinary lengths to understand a subject is both unique and incredibly rewarding. The gritty nature of the subject overlaid with the adventure that ensues makes for compelling reading. Whilst it is regionally heavy, it has considerable relevance and insight into current global trends where more people than ever before are making the decision to take perilous journeys to create a better future for their families. I have completed the book with my perception of the world much better informed.

This is a brilliant and compelling read

This is a brilliant and compelling read, written without judgement or affectation. The author offers a rare insight into the life of Cape Town's transient stowaways, their culture, routes and motivation, and in doing so draws the reader into a world that is both squalid and magnificent. A must read for anyone interested in how Africa functions.
