The writing in this book was amazing. The story was complex, and there was a lot of action that made it hard to put the book down to do things like eat and sleep. The details about Zimbabwe made me feel like I was there. The characters didn't feel like your formulaic romance novel characters. Joni was a strong woman who proved that she knew how to survive, but she wasn't so tough that I wasn't able to identify with her. She never gave into damsel-in-distress syndrome, even though there were more than a few times that warranted it. Ian was dashing and clever, but there was no insta-love or lust. Their connection grew slowly throughout the book, making it feel more real and strong. I love it when a book lets the characters and story develop in the forefront, while the romance simmers in the background.
If you want a suspenseful story with political corruption, murder and a little bit of romance on the side, then you’re going to love this.
