Steven Seagal can consider himself lucky if he ever makes a better movie than this one, which was appropriately dubbed "Die Hard on a battleship" when released in 1992. Seagal handles the heroic duties with his usual wooden efficiency, but the movie's greatest assets are a punchy script and the scene-stealing performances of Tommy Lee Jones and Gary Busey. The two play leaders of a terrorist group who take over the venerable battleship USS Missouri during its final commissioned voyage. They're crazed psychotics who seize control of the ship's nuclear arsenal, but they don't know that Seagal--as the ship's cook, no less--is a former Navy hero, lurking in the shadows and waiting to spoil their nefarious scheme. Director Andrew Davis (The Fugitive) helms the action with skillful style, and as the cheesecake stripper who proves handy with a hand grenade, Playboy Playmate-turned-actress Erika Eleniak gives Seagal another reason to strut his macho stuff. Under Siege is hormonal hokum for gun-happy viewers, but as action movies go, this one's a definite guilty pleasure. --Jeff Shannon

4.0 out of 5 stars Watch this movie for Tommy Lee Jones' performance May 18, 1999
By A Customer
Format:VHS Tape
Seagal puts in a better performance than any of his other movies. But the best parts of this movie were the scenes totally stolen by Tommy Lee Jones. The conversation between Jones and his former CIA superior ("...deforestation, irreversibly progressive depletion of the global gene pool. It all adds up to oblivion, pal. Governments will fall, anarchies will reign. It's a brave new world.") is priceless, and matched only by Alan Rickman's list of demands in the original "Die Hard." If Marisa Tomei can win an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress in "My Cousin Vinny," (which I loved, by the way) then Jones should have won a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his performance in this movie. Jones (with Gary Busey pitching in to help in places) is the only thing that saves this movie from being a standard, cookie-cutter Seagal shoot-'em-up. Jones gets this movie two more stars than it would've had without him as William Strannix. Bravo!

5.0 out of 5 stars great movie ,great action, good performance by seagal October 15, 2004
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
i really liked this seagal flick i think its one of his best. His dry humor worked perfectly in this movie , if he turned out more movies like this one he would be a house hold name. The adition of gary bussey and tommy lee jones were great villans, over the top and very cool. Seagal plays a cook/ ex navy seal, and tommy lee and bussey plays terrorists, bussey is sort of the serious no nonsense type , and tommy lee is more the hippy type/lunatic.

The scenes of the battleship were amazing, i like this flick because its not ALL about seagal like his other movies usually focusing on him an leavin the movie to follow. There are some cool scenes with tommy lee and bussey in this one you feel seagal is in the movie as opposed to seagal an then the movie. The action is of course great , seagal is in top form in this one showing of he really is a martial arts master, the best fight scenes are of seagal an tommy lee mixing it up with knives in the films finale, truly amazing becuz tommy lee actually holds his own against seagal . Over all a great action movie i only wish the sequel was as good.

Another military themed movie that is entertaining. Steven Siegal, Tommy Lee Jones, Gary Busey...I just have to have this in my Amazon library. Storyline is a little over the edge but then again, so is the cast! As former Navy, myself, I always enjoy seeing these type of "Save the World" movies.

The majority of the movie is in clear HD picture which makes the movie even better than when it was released in the 1992!!. A major improvement over the DVD release that I have viewed multiple times. The movie is a Segal classic and his best movie in my opinion and of course with Tommy Lee Jones you can't go wrong adding it to your collection!

5.0 out of 5 stars clean scenes, when treated March 24, 2007
By toddo
Format:Blu-ray
I would say 90% of the whole movie was cleaned and sharpened for HD. Other 10% of random scenes exhibited alot of grain and snow. Still a major improvement over the DVD release that I have viewed multiple times. Only wished they cleaned the whole movie. You won't miss the untreated scenes, extremely grainy. Otherwise, still a great movie in my opinion.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved it...You can't miss! January 8, 2015

I enjoyed this most, compared to all Seagal movies. Yes, Busey & Jones were terrific villains; and Busey's "get up" and performance in the beginning was truly a comic/adventure/twisted work of art. One of the best scenes in any move ever. Steven Seagal as "the lowly cook" was spot on in this one. Just see it... it has no gratuitous or needless violence (just bad guys getting dispatched of course) or sex; in fact "the stripper" character ("Miss July" hired to jump out of a cake) was played surpeisingly well by a lovely actress who also truly delivered good depth to a more-than-predicted role. Again, just see it-you will not be disappointed.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Movie, but where are the features? June 17, 2011
Format:Blu-ray
First off, this review is for the Blu-ray edition of the movie. The movie itself is great. Some grainy/snowy parts in the HD department. The picture actually fills out my screen, instead of being boxed in like most of my other discs. I am not sure if that is because this edition or something on my end.

The thing that let me down a little was the lack of features. The only extra on the disc is the trailer in SD. Because of the missing features I dinged a star off.

Overall, if you are a fan of action this is a great movie. I have seen it several times and it doesn't get old. I would say this is one of Steven Seagals best movies.

4.0 out of 5 stars I like it better each time October 1, 2014
Format:Amazon Video|Verified Purchase
I have seen Under Siege three times now. I like it better each time. It's a good ride. It weaves the action into a ceremony involving the decommissioning of the USS Missouri. As a result, the scope of the story expands beyond the narrow confines of a typical imagined assault and provides good reason to have some old salts along to handle the Missouri's big guns. Seagal is well used. Gary Busey and Tommy Lee Jones are as good as you've ever seen them. Miss January (Erika Eleniak) steps up to the plate.

It's very excellent dumb fun. Last time I watched it with my son. We already plan to watch it again.
