"What the world desperately needs from you is more of you . . . We need it. And we're desperate for it."
That is a great thought and profound. Perfect really!
Second, Gilmore uses quotes from other authors well. He quotes some of my favorites: Ravi Zacharias and C.S. Lewis for example.
Third, the second chapter has some great quotes but it is so quick. If a person is actually dealing with any of the problems mentioned they probably need a whole lot more than Gilmore's simple answers. Yes, God works the impossible and He is the great healer, but some of our soul healing must take some time.
Here is another quote I liked:
"To prove to the world that God is good, you must give unbelievers free samples of God."
And now to the things I didn't appreciate much in the book:
He abruptly skips from the story of Joseph to Steve Jobs. The compassion is understandable but Gilmore's examples encourage us to see serving God fully will gain us worldly success. I don't think this is what he means but His words could be read this way. God doesn't guarantee his followers success in this world. In fact, many Believers fail, are killed, or lose all their worldly possessions.
I also do not like the sexist language he uses in relation to Potipher's wife. He writes, "Potipher wouldn't have a uggo for a spouse. No, she was a babe."
I think he was trying to be cute or funny but it isn't funny. I don't think Jesus would call a woman a uggo or a babe.
Overall, it is a good book but to me it feels like two or three different unfinished books shoved together to make a whole book. Nonetheless, reading this book will benefit your life and your walk with the Lord.
Under the Sun biblically explains how we can discover our calling and be the very best at what ever it is, that God calls us to be. Chapter two directly describes weapons satan uses against us, “…keeping Christians on the couch watching television rather than on their knees praying.” (page 18) Then, Andrew offers us obtainable weapons of our own, so that we can combat evil.
Andrew’s encouragement to “…seek out who God made you to be and pursue it to the best of your ability,” (pages 34-35) draws Christians to a higher level of communing with God. Because when we put our faith and trust in who He is and what His Word says, we realize “in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose,” Romans 8:28.
As this book suggests, I believe finding ones calling requires us to expand our horizons and try new things. That is the only way to discover what we enjoy or don’t enjoy, as we maneuver our way through the labyrinth of life. And along the way, “Trust that God will lead you in the right direction.” (page 69)
Then once you find your calling, without hesitancy - “…get to work” (page 121). Like Paul the apostle, we need to go. Be the best we can be. If you have any doubts, the author reminds us no matter our circumstance, “God wants to use you, and He will if you’re willing.” (page 123)
I congratulate Andrew on writing a book so many Christians can learn from. To help us during uncertain times and find God’s true path.
I felt like I was talking with a friend while reading this book. I could hear my old friend Andy's sense of humor in every page, while taking in the words of wisdom he offered. I think this book is great for new believers but also for Christians like me who need a little nudge in the right direction.
