It is hard to catergorise Vulgar Unicorn's music overall, but Under the Umbrella fits in-between Progressive Rock and Jazz. VU also have released the Collectible Albums "Jet Set Radio" AND "Sleeps with Fishes" and over the past couple of years "Divadroid" and "Persona non grata" surfaced, both featuring rare unreleased tracks, demo's and side projects. The nucleus of the Unicorn consists of Neal Randall on bass and Keyboards and Bruce 'Adrian' Soord (Now leading the awesome Pineapple Thief) on guitars. Guest musicians and vocals always appear on their albums. One thing I cannot figure out though is why Bruce Soord never sang lead vocals. His voice is absolutely riveting with the "Thief", and his guitar work on "Thief of Clubs" is dynamic, and probably the best I have heard of him from the many CDs I own that possess his skills. Favourite track to me is "Under the Umbrella" mainly again for the top notch guitar and the soothing whirling keys of Randall. The vocals are OK, but a bit "Arty" for my taste. God! It would be great if Soord and Randall could do this album again and Bruce doing all the vocals. As the previous reviewer also pointed out, there is a couple of minutes silence during "Thief of Clubs". I cannot for the life of me figure out why bands do this as it seems to be a growing trend (Remember, this release is from 1994). My daughters CD of 30 Seconds to Mars "Beautiful Lie" also has a couple of minutes silence on one track, and she won't even listen to it, or will just skip to when the music comes back on. Vulgar Unicorns music, at times, is utterly heavenly, most notably when the Harp is introduced in one of their songs. If you are really taken aback by this album then you will then be forced to look for the Persona Non Grata (Basically still Vulgar Unicorn) CD "A fine art of Living" as this includes the original demo versions of House at Fudge Corner, by post chaise... and Waiting under the umbrella. Check them out, and then check out Pineapple Thief for dessert.

Listened to this album and felt relaxed. If I had to compare the sound to any other bands I am familiar with, Porcupine Tree comes to mind. The first three tracks comprise one 40 minute song. Last track ends around 10 minutes into it, a few minutes of silence, then some more hidden tunage to round out this release.
