The Short Version: There are parts on this that could be easily broken and the the two buttons that make various features work are inauspicious, but it looks and sounds great. I would suggest it might be better for cosplayers then as a plaything for a young child.

The Long Version:
Let's get something clear here: I'm a grown up lady who takes good care of her possessions. Now granted, I am also a grown up lady who buys Doctor Who toys and admits, in a public forum, to occasionally carrying them around with her and playing with them... but that's not my point. My point is, even in my silliest of moods I'm reasonably careful with my possessions and I'm a little scared to take this thing off the shelf.

I wouldn't say that the item seems flimsy or poorly constructed, but there are lots of little ridged bibs and bobs on it that make me concerned I'm going to break it. In particular, I'm worried I'm going to snap the clear rod that extends along the bottom from the front to the ring, and the ring itself, when I hold the sonic screwdriver to use it. The little access panel, with the red handle, that you need to remove to access the neural relay and the button that changes the wavelength from blue to red and back, doesn't come out easily. It would be easy to lose the little panel or to snap the tab that holds it in place.

The button placement is a little inauspicious. As I mentioned, you have to open the little access panel to change from blue to red and back, that same button also turns on the "neural relay" lights. I would have liked it better if I didn't have to fiddle with opening an easily lost piece to switch from blue to red. Also, the button to activate the primary function is a bit fiddly.

NOTE: This is NOT the version with the hidden UV (i.e. invisible) pen and light.. You will need this one to get those features: Doctor Who - The Tenth Doctor's Sonic Screwdriver

Yet another in the line of Doctor Who sonics, this one is one of the best and one of the worst at the same time.

The good:

More lights than any of the others. There is even a compartment that you can uncover to see a lit up bar of River's life force, just like in the show. There is also a button under the cover to change the emitter from blue to red (and change the noise, too).

Very detailed. There are a LOT of fiddly bits that make this one really cool looking. They even painted it to look like it was old and corroded, just like in the show.

The bad:

The cover that houses the life force display is tight and has a very flimsy latch. The second one I got was broken right out of the box. Every time you take the cover off or put it back on, you can tell that it is ready to break

The detailing is flimsy. The finger hole feels like it could be broken off with a drop. There are numerous pieces like that on this sonic

The trigger is very hard to press if you have big fingers.

The ugly:

The fit and finish on this sonic is not as good as on the others.. there is a visible gap where the two halves meet.

Bottom line:

I woudn't make this my first one, but it is worth the money for any Doctor Who fan who is collecting sonics.

For all Dr. Who fans. This is a little flimsy. There are smaller plastic pieces I can see easily broken off, but this is a great toy! My darling daughter is a new Dr. Who fan and really wanted a sonic screwdriver. I got her this one. In her exuberance when she received this, she threw out the directions. It took us a while to figure out how to turn it on and make the colors change, but she's been sonic screwdriving everything since. The noise is very similar to the Dr's own sonic screwdriver.

This IS made of plastic. If you look closely at it, it looks pretty cheesy. My DD wanted to know why it looked all rusted. It will not hold up to rough play. It is not a flashlight.

When this one breaks, and I'm pretty sure that will be before next Christmas, I'll order it again. It's tons of fun.

The Underground Toys Doctor Who River Song Future Screw Driver measures 7" in length and closely resembles the 10th Doctor's screwdriver. The River Song version varies in a few different ways, all of which are evident in this toy version. Unlike the Doctor's counterpart, this version does not extend. They've added a few different design elements, such as a plate that covers the neural relay, depicted by a series of LEDs which light up with a long press of the settings button, displaying Rivers saved life force. The settings button also changes the normally blue screwdriver LED into the life saving red setting.

We have quite the geeky home office and I bought this more as a piece for her to display, and it is her first screwdriver in our now combined collection. It comes with batteries installed, and uses 3 LR44 batteries when its time to replace them. I think she was excited by the gift, so far the installed batteries have held up to her hours of making things around the house "more sonic" It should easily hold up to normal wear and tear, but it is a toy after all and should be treated properly if you want it to last a time lords life time.
