Review

While readers will likely choose The Underground for its fantasy elements of vampires, werewolves, and the like, to call it an urban fantasy is to simplify its complexity, which ventures into the detective and mystery arenas with its presentation of an interstellar assassins's impact. Graphic sexual scenes and ripples of violence and profanity throughout make this story a recommendation not for the light reader of vampire tales; but for those who can appreciate a gritty, street-wise, and sometimes sordid tone to descriptions of an underground world whose inhabitants skirt the boundaries of propriety.

Delve into the hidden worlds of these creatures of the night. They're vivid and engrossingly compelling in a tale highly recommended for sci-fi and urban fantasy readers looking for a story that's satisfyingly edgier than most.
--D. Donovan, Senior Reviewer, Midwest Book Review

There is a lot in this urban fantasy for fans looking for an exciting and delightful read. What pulled me in was the compelling cast of characters. From the very beginning, the reader already gets the feeling that the characters are well imagined. I also enjoyed the originality in the plot and the setting is a place readers would really want a peek at--beautifully constructed, and rendered vivid with detailed descriptions. Roxanne Bland has a way of holding the reader's attention by weaving scenes that are emotionally charged and action-packed, focusing on a plot-driven conflict that is irresistible. The Underground features the finest  writing, punctuated by lovely, insightful passages and descriptions. The novel is well-structured to have the reader turning pages. There are many instances where a reader expects a denouement, but the author introduces yet another twist that invites them to turn to the next page. This book was exciting and immensely enjoyable.

For an amazing blend of urban dark fantasy, paranormal romance and science fiction with a healthy dose of the erotic thrown in, The Underground by Roxanne Bland is the perfect book. Characters are wonderfully depicted in all their differences, and the action keeps you turning the pages, anxious to see what can possibly happen next. Bland uses her tremendous imagination to take what could be a run of the mill paranormal story to a whole different level with delightful results. Great story! I loved every page and hope to see more of this group that seems to rival The Guardians of the Galaxy for a strange combination of do-gooders! This is definitely a must-read!

From the Author

I've been asked how in the world did I come up with a story like "The Underground." Many people have said they've never read anything like it. One person called it "the weirdest story I ever read" (I take that as a compliment).

There were two incidents that gave rise to the story itself. First, back in the day, when science fiction and fantasy were lumped together on bookstore shelves, I thought they were one genre. I didn't know about the ism that said one can't mix science fiction and fantasy, so I did it. Second, my first editor told me to "take us on the wild ride." Well, I did that, too--I created the wildest story I could imagine.

The reaction to the first edition of "The Underground" was mixed. People either loved it or hated it, with very little in between. But the important thing was that I got marvelous feedback. Those critical reviews really made me think. After kicking it around in my head for a couple of years, and writing another book in the meantime, I re-read the first edition and realized they were right. For one thing, I had too many points of view--four was hard enough to follow, and the additional extraneous points of view didn't help matters any. It was then I decided to write a second edition. I felt I owed it not just to my readers, but also to myself to write a better book. I had "The Underground" re-edited by one of the best in the business. Taking her advice, I wrote new chapters, expanded others, stripped out still others, and did all sorts of other things. All in all, I cut about 100 pages from the original book. The second edition, I think, is more cohesive and easier to follow and understand.

So there you have it--how I came up with the original "The Underground" and why I wrote the "The Underground: Second Edition." If you choose to purchase my novel, I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it--both editions.
