The Blade Keepers are still on a mission to return the Comitatus to the glory it once held, and to get rid of the corruption and sense of privilege they now hold. Intrigue is the name of the game, along with a healthy dose of romance, to keep you turning the pages of Underground Warrior long into the night.
Sibyl Daine is an exile. Convicted of a crime she did not commit, that killed her father, teenager Sibyl had to learn how to survive. Her quest is to get revenge against the secret society, the Comitatus, who are responsible for her conviction. Finally after several years of searching, Sibyl is close to getting what she has long desired... until she meets a man who turns her world upside down and makes her question all she knows.
Trace Beaudry is an outcast. As the son of a very powerful member of the Comitatus, Trace should have everything he's ever wanted, except for the fact he hates everything his father stands for, choosing a life of banishment and hardship over blood. The last thing he expected was to become reluctant owner to a very powerful status symbol of the organization he despises, one of their long lost swords. Even more unexpected for Trace is being cast in role of guardian and hero to a young woman who lights a fire in his blood.
Sibyl is a computer hacking genius and Trace is a tough as nails no-holds-barred competition fighter. Trace needs Sibyl to find information on his medieval sword. Sibyl needs Trace to finally get her revenge on the Comitatus. However, as danger beckons and passion rages, the brilliant young woman and her Underground Warrior wonder if they can put their differences aside to find the love they are destined for.
I am a huge fan of Evelyn Vaughn, no matter what name she writes under or what genre her stories are in. Underground Warrior is yet another engrossing story that held me in its grasp until I finished reading.
I admit, I had a vested interest in Underground Warrior long before it was published. I fell in love with Trace Beaudry in Knight in Blue Jeans, just like Sibyl. I was also intrigued by the waifish Sibyl who so desperately wanted to take down the Comitatus. I wanted to know what made Trace tick and I wanted to know more about what initiated Sibyl's drive for revenge. So I jumped in with excitement when Underground Warrior finally became available. Finally we have the answers!
While there were a few slower moments between the covers, this adventure is full of danger and excitement all the way through the end. The fast pace of the story made those few slower moments a chance to catch our breath while we watched Trace and Sibyl fall in love. The suspense angle is well done, though handled in a slightly different way than we'd expect in a romantic suspense novel. While I do miss the mystical angle we had in the Grail Keepers series, from which the idea behind the Blade Keepers originated, there are a couple blink and you'll miss it nods to the history and power behind the swords. Those moments made Underground Warrior all the more intriguing.
Trace and Sibyl are such perfect complements to one another that it's no surprise how strongly they feel. They have their differences and opposing beliefs to overcome, but we never doubt for one moment they'll keep strong in their feelings for one another. I especially loved finding out that while Sibyl might look dainty and in need of a warrior to protect her, she has quite a few tricks up her sleeve. They reveal to us what a kick-ass and take names kind of girl she is when she or those she loves are threatened. Trace's shock and discovering this about her added a touch of humor to the story, over the sheer disbelief that she is quite the whirlwind when necessary.
If you are looking for action, adventure, characters who are passionate about what they believe in, and plenty of love and romance, then Underground Warrior by Evelyn Vaughn is the book for you. I only hope one day Evelyn gets to tell the stories about the rest of this team we've come to know and love.
