Salimu almost feels too grown-up in this YA memoir as his compelling story occasionally shifts from gripping novel to raw ego, putting the reader right there in the city with him.<br><br>Salimu’s story is tough to listen to at times, but ROARS of laughter await anyone brave enough to walk in this man’s shoes. Readers expecting a sad Oliver Twist tale will instead find a confident, talented protagonist who continually defies low expectations and inspires those around him.

While there is language, violence, and sexual themes, all of these are necessary and never done for shock factor.

Underprivileged Overachiever is SHOCKING, but there are a butt-load of lessons to be learned here.

I thought I was the only one with a rough upbringing, especially after constant bullying from peers, teachers, and even coaches. I hated being home because of my mom's drug addiction, and I hated being at school because everyone was mean to me. You were always nice, if it wasn't for you recruiting me to the robotics team in 2010, I definitely wouldn't be where I am now. I would be in jail for what I fantasized about doing everyday during that dreadful bus ride to school, but robotics gave me an excuse not to be home as much, a reason to keep my grades up, and a new outlook on life. You've always been a role model, I look forward to reading the next two books. Keep being an inspiration, trust me, it's working.

Salimu’s memoir is a well-written, timely, and important addition to this genre. The book describes the day to day challenges of life as a homeless teen in Los Angeles. Readers expecting a sad Oliver Twist tale will instead find a confident, talented protagonist who continually defies low expectations and inspires those around him. Salimu’s warm sense of humor makes the book a joy to read, but is best experienced via a very professionally produced audiobook. I’m a bit of an audiobook narrator snob, but Salimu is an excellent narrator with a ton of personality. Salimu is very honest about mistakes and personal flaws, but is continually trying to improve and become the best version of himself. Masculinity plays an important role as he discovers and rediscovers what it truly means to be a man. The book reminds the reader the importance of not judging those around you because you have no idea what they are going through.

Younger readers should be advised that the book contains some mature content.

Underprivileged Overachiever is an important read, although it may be difficult for some to face. Salimu is raw and unflinching in his descriptions of homelessness, violence, and sexual assault while growing up in LA. This book will challenge you, making you face your own privilege. But there is beauty, humor, and happiness too, and you will find yourself rooting for this young man and his younger brother to succeed. The story is quick, rarely giving you a chance to catch your breath and not wanting to put it down until the end.

Full disclosure, I am mentioned several times in the book and look even more like a nerdy Santa Claus than I did a decade ago.

A quick and excellent read, stories like this, need to be told for the sake of the young readers that will see themselves in Yohancé. Yohancé does an incredible job retelling his pain, failures, fears, successes and happy moments about growing up homeless in South Central LA. He's inspiring, charismatic and funny in his retelling but also makes sure to give difficult topics their proper time of day. I 100% recommend this book.

P.S. I can't wait for the next installment about his adventures at the air force academy.

This book is filled with emotion and pain so have a box of tissues handy as you read this. However, the author didn’t write this so that people would despair because there is also success and humor for the reader to grasp on to. This is a truly inspiring book about one man’s journey from childhood to manhood. Although no-one, no child should have to live through abuse and poverty this author not only survived but he decided to use it to help educate others about the horrors that are occurring in our society. This book is also a testament to the author’s determination to not allow his past determine his future, he refused to become another victim, another statistic, he chose to use his life to inspire anyone and everyone who he could reach.

Amazing True Story

** spoiler alert ** Thank you to the author, publisher, and Netgalley for approving me for the audiobook ARC for this book so I can leave my honest review.

I can honestly say, listening to this memoir being told by the author himself had my husband and I completely SHOOK. Learning about Yohance and his family was one of the most heartbreaking books that I think I've read this year so far. Being underprivilaged is no joke, homelessness is no joke, sexual abuse, and abuse in general is nothing to joke about. Hearing his story going from living in The Place and staying with friends, he did everything he could to make it to the top. never gave up, never looked back. Yohance made a real difference in his life for not just himself but he did it for his younger brother and helped pave the road for him and others on the robotics team.
Thank you for taking the time to tell your story, even though it was filled with sadness and heartbreaking situations. Knowing that he gave his all is what makes this book a 5 star read. I truly hope he writes the other 2 he has planned.
