Written for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) sufferers yet useful for anyone wishing make better use of their time, this book is abundant with effective strategies for combating problems related to inattention, procrastination, disorganization, mismanagement of time, and poor planning. It begins by carefully explaining the neurologic underpinnings of ADHD and focusing on specific executive functions—the brain-based processes that assist in planning, initiating, and carrying out tasks to complete projects. Then using exercises designed to identify areas that need addressing, it aims to "tune up" these executive functions for maximum productivity. In contrast to many books on ADHD, which can have good ideas but lack practical ways to apply them in everyday life, this guide includes specific recommendations for improving distractibility, working memory, attention, organization, time management, and response inhibition deficits. With strategies based in the science of how the ADHD brain processes information, this reference bridges the gap between knowledge and action.

"Dr. Tuckman's book
Understand Your Brain, Get More Done provides realistic, practical, and useful information for those with adult ADHD. Not only is the book enlightening, but it also fun to read. The exercises in the book are educational, easy to complete, and give great insight into the world of adult ADHD. I have recommended Dr. Tuckman's companion book More Attention, Less Deficit to my patients and clients, and I have listed it as a recommended resource in my books due to its straightforward nature and wealth of information. I will do the same with Understand Your Brain, Get More Done for the same reasons. They are both outstanding books."  —Stephanie Moulton Sarkis PhD, NCC, LMHC, psychotherapist and author, 10 Simple Solutions to Adult ADD, Making the Grade with ADD, ADD and Your Money, and Adult ADD: A Guide for the Newly Diagnosed

"Dr. Tuckman has provided us with a richly detailed discussion of ADHD in adults and especially how it should be managed, directly written for the adult with ADHD in mind. Wonderfully supportive and informative, this book provides countless recommendations for addressing the myriad symptoms of poor self-control and time management, inattention and disorganization, and impulsive and careless behavior that afflicts nearly every major domain of life activities for adults. The book should prove enormously instructive for both adults with ADHD and for clinicians who specialize in its diagnosis and management."  —Russell A. Barkley, PhD, ADHD expert, researcher, author of numerous books

Finally, a workbook style manual for adults with ADHD from a well credentialed expert!

You don't have to have a diagnosis of ADHD to have some of the symptoms at least some of the time. For such persons and for those who do have ADHD, this workbook is a user-friendly combination of explanation and strategies for dealing with challenges of focus, memory, productivity, and organization.

Tuckman begins by briefly articulating the science underlying the challenges faced by those with an ADD diagnosis, then delves into the specific challenges and possible work-around in all the relevant areas in a very compassionate, accessible fashion.

In addition to chapters on focusing attention, controlling emotions, setting priorities, staying organized, etc., he even put in one for working on these issues as a team with your partner/spouse. Instead of saying what the reader must do, he invites the reader to reflect on past experiences, try new approaches, and then continue reflecting and tweaking. You can completely individualize your approach, choosing which areas to work on first.

Although I do not have ADD, I found his list of tips for managing time incredibly complete since I tend to get into flow and totally lose track of the time. Some examples include build in time to get ready (already had been doing this and it makes a huge difference), add 50% more to all your time estimates (am trying this), put your lights on a timer (need to try!), etc.

This is a perfect book for coaches as well. I shared a section with a dissertation coaching client with the ADD diagnosis, and she was blown away by the spot-on descriptions of the challenges she faces, joking, "How did he get a camera in here and follow me around?" She is now eagerly trying some of the approaches.

I hope this book gets into as many hands as possible as quickly as possible, including those with ADHD, those who live and work with them, and anyone who could use some productivity exercises. I think it will save a lot of hurt feelings, misunderstandings, and failures and recriminations while creating a feeling a mastery and connection.

    Thank you, Dr. Tuckman!

There is a lot of good insight and suggestions. If you have dealt with ADHD for a long time you may have already tried many of the suggestions, but maybe this will give you new motivation.

Great Workbook , really explains and gets to the core of having ADHD, with good interventions for a multidude of issues for those with ADHD/ difficutly with Executive Functioning.
I will admit it is difficult to consistantly complete the excercises/work on my own -- but this is due to ADHD symptoms and not anything to do with how the workbook is written or set up. There is no "magic cure" beyond a strong desire to help yourself and setting up reminders, leaving the workbook out so it is visible, OR using this workbook with your therapist as part of your treatment plan which will hold you more accountable.

This book was a great read for my over active mind. As I have a lot of trouble staying focused this book set itself up to engage me. I was able to not only get thru this book, but also pull ALOT of good tips from it for my everyday life. It can be hard living with ADHD, but it can be even harder to find the proper resources out there to help deal with the issues adhd in tells. After my therapist recommended this I bought it with doubt in mind. I am not only able to focus more clearly, but I am also getting ALOT more done after reading this book!

The irony is that I got distracted and never finished the book. This book was recommended to me by a therapist I was seeing. I don't recommend it as I don't recall reading anything that gave me a sort of "aha" moment. The solutions and worksheets, although practical, didn't seem to get to me key issues of focus. They seemed pretty simplistic and shallow. I'd recommend other books about how to enhance your focus versus this one. They help you understand the root of your issues vs. just having a bandaid for a temporary fix. Anyway, I didn't give a 2 star, which is how I really feel, since I didn't finish it.

The problem with using books for ADHD, is 1.retaining info 2.not getting bored while reading.

    This one is different!

This books is so helpful because it has you working and answering questions, you can go around to any part you want, and you won't be losing information in the process. I recommend this to anybody having complications in any realm of ADHD.

Also would help even just someone with a busy life!

3.0 out of 5 stars OK for people who struggle with reading. At the same time, not much fun to fill out
Reviewed in Germany on September 17, 2014
I bought this book because I was interested in an executive functions-specific approach.

But my feeling is that this book has actually been written for non-readers. No offense meant! It's just that there's a lot of ADHD people out there who don't like reading and struggle with longer, more complex texts. If this is the case with you, then the book may actually be a very good choice.

However, as someone who reads a lot and is familiar with ADHD as a topic, I found that the author does not progress quickly enough, and that there are too many repetitions. For basically everything he says (of which everything sounds valid and full of empathy, by the way, so it surely is top notch content-wise), the author asks his readers to jot down examples from their own lives. Accordingly, there are many, many dotted lines in the book, lots of space to fill out.

And this, for me, is where the author's approach gets a bit inconsistent. As I said, I like reading, and also writing, but I cannot imagine myself filling out all these blank spaces - it just gets really boring! So while he seems to address people who do not usually spend too much time around books, he kind of expects you to write half of this book yourself. Which, I agree, may be just the idea of having a work book in the first place, ha ha ha... :D

And yet I find many of the writing prompts redundant (e.g.: List all the approaches and strategies you have used in dealing with xyz so far... ), and I feel overwhelmed by the amount of writing there is to do.
Mabe a more action-oriented work book (one where you write things first and then check them off the list instead of writing about them, or something along the line) would have been more suited for the regular ADHD sufferer.

But as I said, everyone is different; content-wise the author seems extremely well informed, so it may still be a great book for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just buy it!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on May 27, 2012
I've been waiting impatiently (sic) for this book to be made available on Amazon and it's been well worth it. I've only just bought it but it seems extremely practical and easy to work with. I'm looking forward to mentioning it to the folk at the adults with AD/HD support group that I'm involved with / other relevant people. What an excellent resource to have in the UK when there is so little support and understanding for adults with AD/HD available. As Ari puts it "Executive Functions Explains It All".

When an author gets a really positive review from Barkley (who continues to expand on his excellent insights into the workings of 6 Executive Functions) plus a great Foreword from Hallowell, you know this is really worth buying.
