This book is simply phenomenal. Sunquist illuminates the Missio Dei through history, theology, and praxis. Sunquist's prose is clear and engaging. His thought draws deeply from the well of the "Great Tradition." He writes with passion and conviction that is contagious. The book unfolds in three sections, focusing on 1) history, 2) theology, and 3) practice. Each, in its own right, is worth the cost of the book.

The first section is a breathtaking glimpse of Christianity as a global movement. It is not intended to be a comprehensive account, but it shows the reader where he or she stands in the story. Sunquist has remarkable historical sensibilities.

In the second section Sunquist constructs a trinitarian account of the missio Dei and the church's participation in it. He writes that the church participates "in the Triune God through the suffering of Christ, who was sent by the Father for the redemption and liberation of the world, by means of the conversion of individuals and cultures, in the power of the Holy Spirit, to the end that God be glorified in the nations and in all of his creation" (173).

In the third section Sunquist sets forth the "missional DNA of the church" and addresses the questions, "What does a church look like when it is faithful to mission, living into the suffering and glory of God in the world today? ... in short, how does the church participate in the answer to the Lord's prayer: 'Thy Kingdom come on earth as it is in heaven'?" Throughout his work, Sunquist understands suffering and glory as a twin theme characterizing participation in Christ and the missio Dei.

In short, "Understanding Christian Mission" is a more than worthwhile read for anyone who wants to better understand––and live––the missio Dei.

Sunquist's book on Christian missions is extremely insightful. Not only does the book give a great look back at the history and theology of missions and missio dei, but it is also packed with implicit and explicit contemporary applications. I think this book is an important harbinger for the church as both suffering and glory are on the horizon in this tumultuous century. Sunquist's radiating faith in the living God encourages the reader throughout the book and the theme of GLORY stands tall.

For the casual reader, this book is a fantastic introduction to Christian mission and thinking about the topic in a more robust way, beyond simplistic, pop-culture Christian literature. For the academic reader, Sunquist's volume is extremely scholarly and yet readable. He engages with the heavy-hitters in missions in a way that is accessible and profound. This is typical of Sunquist's other volumes as well and his style across the board resonates with many kinds of readers.

I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in understanding Christian missions from a historical and theological perspective, with relevant contemporary applications.
