About the Author

Carolyn Kousky is the associate vice president for economics and policy at Environmental Defense Fund. Previously, she was Executive Director of the Wharton Risk Management and Decision Processes Center at the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Kousky has written extensively on the economics and policy of natural disasters, disaster insurance market, and climate risk management policies. She is routinely cited in media outlets including NPR, The New York Times, The Washington Post, and others. Dr. Kousky is a University Fellow at Resources for the Future and a non-resident scholar at the Insurance Information Institute. She is vice-chair of the California Climate Insurance Working Group. She has a BS in Earth Systems from Stanford University and a PhD in Public Policy from Harvard University.

So much of the academic study of risk has focused on the negatives. This book thinks hard about how we can redistribute risk in ways that benefit both people and nature as we all attempt to navigate the rapidly changing world we now live in. If you have no prior knowledge about disaster insurance in the U.S. and are interested in understanding our increasingly disaster-prone world, this is the book for you. If you are an insurance person (like me) and are familiar with the basics of insurance (e,g, criteria for insurable risk), you will not find it boring. For those who are interested in how disaster insurance can benefit our businesses and its relationship with risk reduction, you will find it insightful. The book is highly readable thanks to the author's writing. The book also does a great job of describing what has been done in the disaster insurance world, what is getting the most attention nowadays, and the promise of innovation.

This is a readable overview of disaster insurance. It is a good text for students, policymakers, or others interested in this topic. The last third of the book discusses ways to use insurance to help solve pressing challenges, such as improving equity in disaster recovery, adapting to climate change, and protecting nature. The innovations profiled paint an optimistic and exciting future for the industry. Many in the insurance sector, while likely familiar with the content in the first two sections, should really enjoy reading all the chapters on innovations.
