- Reviewed in the United States on April 29, 2015This is the second one of these books I have purchased. One for me, and one for the grandparents. I've always known from a very young age that my little one was different. She's had food and speech issues, she stopped napping at 2, she's aways been defiant. She's take risks and has done things other little girls were and are afraid of. And at first it was funny. It still kind of is. But school has been challenging and her relationships with her peers are also difficult at times. Now at 8 years old and after a battery of testing her results have come back with ADHD and anxiety. Of course I cried because like any mom we want to think our baby is fine. But she's not. She's incredibly bright, funny, imaginative and I wouldn't want it any other way. But this book has helped me understand what is going on in that beautiful head of hers. This book has opened my eyes to what is happing, what's been happening, and what's going to happen. They use a number of different case studies. Because just like fingerprints no two girls are the same.
Now that I know what's going on I can take the proper steps to help her through speech and socialization. Occupational therapy, and the list goes on. What I have learned from this book as that it's not the end of the world, and it's not a race. My child will improve socially as well as scholastically with time, patience, and unconditional love. If you think your daughter may have ADHD, or if she has already been diagnosed, I highly recommend this book. It has given me a LOT of aha moments. "So that's what that was." Most importantly as a parent keep your sense of humor and don't lose faith. Because as I tell my daughter, it's not our labels that define us, but how we break through them that defines our character. THAT is what makes us who we are. And my little risk taker is going to grow up to be one hell of a woman.
I don’t know why my review has been hidden. Over 60 people have found this helpful.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 20, 2024Filled with clinical research, cutting edge information, and practical knowledge for parents and teachers, this book is a must read for all who work with girls in any capacity.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 31, 2022My daughter is currently in 7th grade with inattentive ADHD. We didn’t even know what inattentive ADHD was until one of her teachers brought it to our attention in 4th grade, and we have been trying to help her ever since.
This book would have helped us a lot had we had it 3 years ago, because there is very little out there that focuses on girls and how ADHD is different for them, but this one does. It is sobering and a little scary, but helps you see ADHD and the social problems and emotional scars that come with it for girls, and explains some of the comorbidities that come with ADHD. It offers concrete suggestions, being clear that there is no silver bullet.
If I had this book 3 years ago, it would have helped us even more.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 30, 2016Very informative and easy to read book. You can get a bit bogged down in the discussion of treatments, but that is because the author is very through. Excellent information plus a guide to more resources. I have recommended it to others.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 24, 2023All of the reviews were right this is an excellent book if you’re trying to understand your daughter or girl in your life with ADHD.
So many of the other books are geared toward the “typical” ADHD seen in boys. My daughters ADHD is very different from my sons and this book is helping me understand why. I highly recommend it for anybody trying to understand their daughters.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 3, 2024This book I originally bought to help myself parent my daughter better who I think has ADHD traits and to find I too checked off every single trait and explains so many challenges I dealt with as a child into teen years. Quite sad my dad never took the time to get me help. I am going to advocate for myself and my daughter to getting professional guidance so we can both continue to succeed in life.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 23, 2024Arrived in a timely manner & looked nearly new
- Reviewed in the United States on March 27, 2021I bought this book upon the recommendation of my college grad ADHD daughter. I wish I had it 15 years ago! It is very well done, reporting research without using scientific terms. It was extremely useful to me this year as I hosted a ADHD 3rd grader for remote school. It helps me understand how she thinks and learns. She has advanced 2 grade levels in both reading and math!

JetageReviewed in the United Kingdom on August 17, 20185.0 out of 5 stars Great strategies for managing the introverted nuanced side to ADHD
Loving reading this book, and letting it guide my behaviour and reactions. ADHD in girls isn't the same as boys. It's can be more introverted, nuanced behaviour that is cast aside as character traits like dreamy, quietly flightly, or fickle. But they can be just as difficult to live with as the screaming around disrupting boy traits. So this book helps greatly in spotting, managing and working up strategies to help children and parents.
As a side note, I haven't found the advice that says hold them upside down yet, but there's still a few pages to go!
LozzaReviewed in Australia on February 16, 20223.0 out of 5 stars Very informative but can be quite dry and scientific
This is an informative book which explains a lot of the issues of girls with ADHD but is a bit dense for those of us who aren’t scientists!

This book changed when I knew about my own ADHD and helped my daughter on her ADHD journey to success.

Amazing book!
CarlaReviewed in the United Kingdom on February 3, 20165.0 out of 5 stars An Important Informative Book for Anyone Who Wants and Needs To Understand Children With ADHD
I have been looking for books on ADHD since my 11 year old daughter was diagnosed with it four years ago. Finally I find one with a mindful of essential, helpful and enlightening information and help. It's a book for reference, help, guidance and most of all information I didn't realise or didn't know. Yes I would highly recommend this book to anyone parenting, living, teaching, caring or just know of a child with ADHD. Children with ADHD are so very much misunderstood by their peers, parents, teachers, family, friends and strangers. I am so pleased I found and purchased this book.
