Most ipv6 books you will see were written in the early 2000's and the information is dated to say the least. This book is the best book that covers up to date ipv6 topics and standards for both windows and networking, Cisco Press has this detailed that is this up to date. Great book!

This book is very well written and highly detailed. I would recommend it for Network Engineers wanting to know a lot about IPv6, but it is a little too detailed (in depth) for Network Administrators (which I am). As much as I love to study the bit level composition of network packets, it does little to help me configure and manage networks. I was hoping to read a lot about how to utilize/manage IPv6 on Window's based LANs (i.e. a practical guide) but instead read a lot about all the IPv6 theory and specifications behind the protocol. This book does cover a little bit on the practical side, but not nearly enough for me.

I will be searching for a more practical book on IPv6.

Lots of extensive information both historic as well as conventional - how to make use of the new format.

I find Joseph Davies' constant bashing and rail roading of IPv4 to be a major turn off. This book should be about education , not trashing ... We all know of IPv4's limitations. We all know IPv6 is more advanced and that IPv6 will one day replace IPv4. But do not focus on trashing something just because it is the previous version. Despite the fact that IPv4 was supposed to be terminated back in 1996, it has, and is still today performing very well. As of today, nothing else is better than IPv4, not even IPv6. No one would use IPv4 today if IPv6 was better. IPv6 is STILL in the development stage, otherwise IPv4 would be gone tomorrow!

A person teaching Trigonometry should not focus on trashing Algebra; he should focus on teaching trig! Shame shame Joseph Davies . IPv4 is working perfectly as far as how it has been designed to work. I only hope IPv6 will function and serve as well as IPv4 has.

I also found the opening comments of how Microsoft's IPv6 programming is too exclusive and that only a handful of elite MS coders are allowed to know anything about IPv6 programming code to be EXTREMELY ARROGANT. IPv4 and IPv6 100% open standards developed by an open source oriented community ! I dare Microsoft and Joseph Davies to develop their own proprietary globally routable network protocol suite. Sorry, but that will NEVER happen.

Plus, without open standards, Microsoft would not even exist. Active Directory would not exist without open source standards such as LDAP and Kerberos ....

Microsoft, enjoy the use of free open source and the free work of real programmers.

Joseph Davies, stop bashing IPv4 and focus on educating others on IPV6. I will never purchase another of your books. There are far better , more professional , technical authors who do not feel the need to trash the excellent work of others. I guess you have to kiss the back side of Microsoft in order to keep your job, but you only damage your credibility when you falsely imply that only Microsoft is working on IPv6 program code and that that code is too secret to share. If anything , Microsoft is likely using IPv6 public domain or open source code developed by others in their Microsoft programs.

Ottimo per capire "l'interpretazione di Microsoft" dell'IPv6. In alcuni punto è forse un po' troppo dettagliato nell'analisi. Comunque obbligatiorio da leggere per un system administrator Windows.

I watched a short webcast by Keith Mayer (very good) in which he recommended this book (and declared his interest as a technical reviewer, even though he is not listed on the relevant pages). I took the plunge and bought the book and I've learned a lot in the first 75 pages - worth the money for anyone looking at IPv6 even on non-MS platforms - I do have another book on IPv6 (but Kindle, not paper) and it is not as good, partly because it still treats deprecated features (such as site-local addresses)as if they are current. This book does seem to be up to date (although the RFCs for IPv6 are evolving fast as the take-up for the technology accelerates).
