I own one of the slates and am disappointed that there are people giving a dive slate poor reviews when they want to use it in the shower. When diving you would not want a grease pencil as it could smudge. The standard pencil works fine though it takes some practice writing legibly if you are not used to the change in depth perception from a SCUBA mask. Cleaning the slate is easy. I prefer to use Comet kitchen cleaner, a tiny bit rubbed in with a few drops of water will do the trick. A large rubber eraser will get most of the marks off but leave residue. I keep an eraser in my log book for quick cleanup, then really wash it off at home with the Comet (or Ajax). I have found that the flip style slates that strap to your arm are better as an Instructor because I get more surface area to use, but that is more difficult to share with a buddy. This slate is perfect to hand off underwater. The pencil should be sharpened with a knife (dive knife or box cutter) for a more blunt tip rather than a pencil sharpener. This will prevent the tip from breaking underwater and also produce a thicker line which is easier to read underwater.

My wife and I were newer divers going spending a week in Palau diving. These were invaluable. When you are a new diver it is difficult to remember the hand signals for everything. When my wife didn't have enough weight it was easy for her to tell me. The writing instrument attached is a regular pencil. It didn't have an eraser, but oddly enough rubbing my flip flop on it worked well enough. This tablet glows in the dark, and the neck swivels so you can use the other side if you have written too many messages.

I am a SCUBA diver, but I am also getting back into swimming for fitness and triathlons. I use this for swim training.

As part of my swim training, I am doing sprints and trying to keep track of my times. This slate is GREAT for that use.

I put it on the deck at the end of the pool, then start my timed sprint. When I finish the sprint, I write on the slate the date, my sprint distance and time. Then I do another one, and another one, and another one. At the end of the workout, I transfer my times to my work out sheet/software to track my progress.

The slate seems to use a regular wooden graphite pencil (included). This writes pretty lightly on the slate. It has been readable without too much strain pool side, but I am guessing it would be hard to read at any depth on a dive.

For diving, I would strongly prefer a black grease pencil that makes very strong and easily readable marks on the slate. There is NO grease pencil included for this slate (although they are available separately and easily attached to this slate).

I was searching all over the Internet for a waterproof white board or something similar and found this. I gave it to a friend as a gift to write notes on while showering and it works fabulously. So if you come up with brilliant ideas while in the shower, this works to jot them down so you don't forget them. A Mister Clean Magic Eraser also works to get the pencil off the board- I make note of this because I had a hard time finding any information about how to clean the board after you write all over it.

Simple and straightforward - I also bought the 3 layer underwater writing slate too (check it out ) This one is better, simpler and can be easily put in a BC pocket. I bought it with the rather pricey "Gear Keeper RT5-5901 Micro Scuba Retractor Snap Clip Mount with Q/C Split Ring Accessory"

This is a really cool diving slate. It glows in the dark, but it requires a fair amount of charging and only glows enough for you to see that it glows. I guess it helps you find it if you're diving at night. You will still need a light, natural or dive light, to write on it. Very study, seems like good construction.

Great writing slate for the money and we recommend. Pros: good size, worked as expected while diving, fit in our BC pocket and clipped in pocket clip (perfect!). Cons: Wish it came with an eraser. We used regular eraser but would be nice if supplied with slate. But this would not be a reason to hesitate to buy this writing slate.

Like it. I use a China marker and it writes nicely and erases easily. Great for notes. Glow is faint but good if get a call or idea at night. The pencil is okay, keep more blunt to see line better. Good size.
