About the Author

Patricia Raybon is the award-winning author of I Told the Mountain to Move, a 2006 Book of the Year finalist in Christianity Today magazine’s annual book awards competition; and My First White Friend, her racial forgiveness memoir that won the Christopher Award. She is also author of the One Year® devotional, God’s Great Blessings. A journalist by training, Patricia has written essays on family and faith, which have been published in the New York Times Sunday Magazine, Newsweek, Chicago Tribune, USA Today, USA Weekend, and In Touch of In Touch Ministries; and aired on National Public Radio. She is also a regular contributor to Today’s Christian Woman online magazine.

With degrees in journalism from Ohio State University and the University of Colorado at Boulder, Patricia worked a dozen years as a newspaper journalist for the Denver Post and the Rocky Mountain News. She later joined the journalism faculty at the University of Colorado at Boulder, where for fifteen years she taught print journalism. Patricia now writes full-time on “mountain-moving faith.”

Patricia and her husband, Dan, are longtime residents of Colorado and have two grown daughters and five grandchildren. Profound Wisdom and Encouragement

Oh my goodness. I have waited long for this book, prayed for the authors as they wrote this book, and my expectations of what I would find inside the pages of this very important book for our world today, have not only been met but have surpassed my imaginings.

This is not a book one wants to merely "get through." It is profound. I found myself slowing down to take in the poignancy and tenderness expressed by the authors as they bare their souls so that we can all benefit and learn how to dialogue respectfully and truly listen to those who hold different beliefs than ours. Speaking and listening respectfully to those different than we are seems much easier than when they strangers. But navigating and coming through the storms in ones own family - working hard to remember love and respect - that brings it to a whole new level for most of us.
And Patricia and Alana do it - not always smoothly - though the times of grace shine through, but with diligence because they know it's worth the pain.

Thank you, thank you, thank you, Patricia and Alana for your honest transparency as you strive for love's sake.

Honest account of emotions involved.

As a mother of a daughter who was (at the time) dating a young man from the middle East who was Muslim, I was terrified! The daughter's words helped me so much. I mean no disrespect, but the mother's writing style is not my taste, far to formal. The daughter writes intelligently and I would assume much like how she speaks, which I prefer. If you are a struggling parent and need help understanding; or someone converting to Islam and need help expressing yourself, I strongly recommended it. This book is an honest account of the raw emotions we go through. Side note: My daughter and the young man are engaged, she has converted and now lives in Oman. They will be married when the required paperwork is complete. I am truely happy for them and am at peace with it and love my future son in-law to peices!

Hats off to these two women

What creative women to meet an issue head on like these two have and work through the bumps for all to read. This book was sensitive and very well written. I read it in preparation for a trip I will take to visit a family member with an elephant in the room. I feel much more at peace going now that I have finished this book. Thank you both for sharing.

A powrful statement about the role of Faith in our life and Relationships

I really enjoyed the fascinating journey which a mother and a daughter had to take to heal and find new meaning for their relationship with each other and with God. The book is also a wonderful and beautiful exposition of the deeper meaning and role of religion in our life and how it can be a powerful force for peaceful and loving coexistence. The heartaches we may experience in life can turn into an amazing opportunities to grow and mature spiritually and develop deeper and more meaningful relationship with God, our fellow brothers and sisters in humanity and all of God's vast creations. I highly recommend this book.

This book is well meaning. Many families face this kind of problem in one way or another. I am half way through this book but will probably not finish. I don't see the "dialogue" as helpful. What I see is a mom invested desperately in saving her daughter ( that's God's job). I see a daughter who is so equally desperate to separate herself from a mother who loves her too much that she threw the baby out with the bath water in order to do so.(And I am not denigrating her choice.) I can relate to what this woman and her daughter are going through to some extent. Listening to these two just reminds me of the frustration this kind of relationship causes. I see no resolution coming. They may tie a bow on it at the end but this is not going away unless mom backs off and just lives her faith. I say this as a Christian. Her daughter has made a choice. Let it go. Whatever your faith, live it out loud. Let the chips fall where they may. Utilize respect and kindness and boundaries. We do it every day in other areas of our life. We have to . Tip toeing around the issue is what causes the problem (that and wearing your heart on your sleeve). Get up. Go to Easter service or wear your hijab. Then have a cup of coffee and discuss religion if you want. And be careful not to make idols of those you love. And as a note, I won't finish the book probably. She lost me at Joel Osteen.

I enjoyed reading this book, and learned quite a few things about Islam. I like that both the mother and daughter were honest about the fact that there are differences between their religions, and to gloss over those is ungenuine, but that they are working towards a harmonious relationship despite those differences. I gave the book 4 stars because I feel it was about 50 pages too long.

I finished reading this new book from Patricia Raybon last night. What a journey! Wonderful insights and things to ponder. One can feel the tension and angst of both mother and daughter throughout the journey as they work through the dividing personal issues with amazing transparency and vulnerability.
As I was reading, I kept thinking about a recent short essay that seemed so directly relevant to this story, reflected in a sentence in the book, p. 226, “I had to learn the truth of all parents. Our children are not our own.” (http://journeywithjesus.net/theeighthday/121-bending-the-bow)
