About the author

Anne Boyer is a critically acclaimed U.S. poet and essayist and the inaugural winner of the 2018 Cy Twombly Award for Poetry from the Foundation for Contemporary Arts. She is also a 2018 Whiting Award winner in Nonfiction and Poetry and will the 2018-2019 Judith E. Wilson Fellow in Poetry at Cambridge University. Her books include the CLMP award-winning Garments Against Women. She was born in Topeka, Kansas, in 1973.

Boyer mentions how friends may disappear upon deciding that your illness is “too much,” and readers may have a similar reaction to sitting through a book carrying such a heavy topic. You even receive extensive discourse about how life changes when you spend the bulk of your time horizontal, and Anne does so much more eloquently than anyone would anticipate.
The theme of the novel takes a lot of different turns when compared to other stories about cancer patients, and Boyer does not miss her deviation from literary norms. She wants to experience this in her way. Like a poet, she repeats the refrain, “I would rather write about anything else…” and explains how she felt societal pressures to describe her experience a certain way.
Predictability ends pretty early on here. Boyer has a great deal of frustration for what she sees as misrepresentations of breast cancer by the media, Internet, and pharmaceutical industry. She tires of keyboard warriors who think that doctors and patients have easy answers at their disposal.
Boyer writes ambitiously, and the reader hopes that she has exaggerated some of her fears, but she provides valuable firsthand experience confidently. Bring a dictionary, though, and be prepared to reread some parts if you want to understand some of the more profound metaphors fully.
Boyer holds a tension between the details, the grin and bare it mundane aspects of treatment that really are not mundane at all, while engaging in the political and absurd that circles cancer treatment, most specifically cancer that targets women. While some memoirs about cancer might feel heavy and loaded, Boyer enters with a critical eye, almost as if in moments she too is outside of the cancer.
Outside of experience, this is a book that questions, pokes, and prods at the greater system America has around the business of cancer through intimate and eloquent prose.
I would recommend this to any woman writer, or really, any woman at all.
If, however, you're looking for a book that takes a few steps away from cancer and gazes back at it through an eye that is sometimes philosophical, sometimes literary, sometimes poetic, sometimes angry, sometimes political, and sometimes hilarious, this is the one.
I'm six years out from my cancer diagnosis, have had plenty of time to adjust to the reality of my situation, and I loved the book--or at least most of it. There were some parts I sort of skimmed, and there will probably be some parts that you will skim, but they most likely won't be the same parts.
Read it. Wait until you are ready, but once you are, read it.
