I picked up Uneasy Lies the Head at a Festival, and was only going to read the first few pages. I kept reading and reading and reading. I really didn't want to put the book down. I loved the pagan elements of the story. This is really a good read.

"Uneasy Lies The Head" (Volume I of the Glastonbury Chronicles) is a fast paced story of future history. Part romance, part mystery, part fantasy, part mythology, it explores a post Monarchical Britain and a private citizen Stephen Windsor who learns the meaning of Divine Right and Divine Responsibility in a time of national catastrophe. A secret Order of Knighthood which has guarded the Sacred Kings for millennia, past-life remembrances, a liberal dose of Shakespeare, a dollop of Robin Hood and you have a Celtic interlace of a plot which sweeps you along with it.

I can't wait to read the rest of the series!

If Robert Heinlein and Neil Gaiman had ever collaborated on a book series, it would probably look a lot like The Glastonbury Chronicles. In this series, S. P. Hendrick delicately weaves history, folklore, mythology, and fantasy into an intensely rich literary brocade.

The first volume, Uneasy Lies the Head, introduces Stephen and Kevin, and it becomes quickly apparent that their friendship is not based in the flesh, but it is, rather, a spiritual relationship spanning many lifetimes. Hendrick blurs the lines of...well, everything...to delicious effect: time, space, the mystical and the mundane, gender, and relationships, to name a few. With all else in soft focus, the reader gets such a pure view of the characters and their driving principles that the experience borders on transcendental.

Being unable to put the book down, I reached the end all too soon, and I found myself wanting to shake it upside down like an empty cereal box, hoping a few more morsels would drop out!

A dash of History (past, present, and future), a sprinkle of Mystery, Suspense, and Adventure, a dab of Romance, and just a pinch of Religion (Mythology, Paganism, and Christianity) ... mix them all together and you get the recipe for a very entertaining book (and series).

Starting with page one, I couldn't put this book down! As an Anglophile myself (living in the USA), I thoroughly enjoyed all the British history, settings, characters, costumes, plots, and concepts. The author is very well versed in all things British (even though she is an American). I loved being transported through both time and space, accompanying the characters throughout their many adventures and misadventures.

My only complaint is that this book was way too short and left me wanting more ... much more! I can't wait until the next book in the series comes out. I look forward to a long and happy relationship with this new and exciting fantasy series, The Glastonbury Chronicles.
