At 30% I thought the story was just meh...but I wanted to stick with it. I hate starting a book and not finishing it. At 65% I almost DNF but once again, I stuck it out. Now that I finished the book, I'd like those hours back! There's not that many books I can't wrangle even two starts for but unfortunately this is one of them. The writing wasn't really the issue either. It was all about the story and characters.
I don't have a problem with a story that's not very original. Many of the books I read have very cliché story lines and I still like them. Some stories just work for me and that's fine. That's why I'm surprised that a book about a dominating man falling for a damsel in distress didn't work. The writing was okay but the story was just blah. It wasn't funny, or sexy, or anything. I didn't think any of the supporting cast added anything either. Everything was blah.
Besides the story being totally lackluster, I thought the heroine was a bitch. Straight up. Tasha complained about everything, was snarky to Dylan, and kept repeating the same things throughout the book. Honestly, I didn't find one redeemable quality about this woman. And Dylan, if he asked Tasha if she was "okay" one more time I thought I was going to throw my kindle across the room. Nothing about this story or characters worked for me unfortunately.
I wouldn't recommend this book and I won't be reading any other books in this series or most likely this author.
Unexpected Angel wasn't exactly what I was expecting, but I was pleasantly surprised. I assumed it would be "hardcore" with the BDSM, being more "erotic". It had a fantastic "romance" feel to it the whole way through.
The story focuses on Tasha Skinner and Dylan Caprese. They met at club one night, and Dylan took an instant liking to her. He knew she didn't belong at "Leather and Lace" night, and decided to get her out of there and meet up with his friends.
Tasha was out that night with her friends celebrating her divorce. She was uneasy from the beginning of the night being made to dress in "underwear". Although the club wasn't her scene, she was curious about what went on there, and shocked at finding out that her friends were into BDSM.
There was instant chemistry between Tasha and Dylan, which brought them both out of their comfort zones. Tasha became open minded to being given orders, and Dylan finally allowed somebody into his private world.
The supporting characters where extremely lovable throughout the story, and each played a vital role without being overpowering.
I was blown away by Sloan Johnson's writing. It dragged my completely into the book from the first page and held me there the whole way through. The characters were realistic and extremely lovable, and the story was fantastic!
I can't wait to see where the next instalment in the Isthmus Alliance Series takes me!
