Editorial Reviews

Review

"This story is a delicious confection from start to finish, with a delightful pair of protagonists, and a wonderfully quirky cast of secondary characters. Add in one of the most spectacularly gorgeous settings - The Canadian Rockies in snowy winter - and the stage is set for a little bit of fairytale romance."

"Captivating! I read this in the sunshine in Cuba and was mesmerized by the descriptions of the mountains, the snow and the emotion."

From the Author

Dear Reader,

I hope you enjoy this seasonal escape to one of my favorite places, The Canadian Rocky Mountains. I've always felt the mountains are magical in their ability to soothe, inspire and heel. And I believe that wonderful things can happen when you're surrounded by their beauty. Including the magic of falling in love.
To me, there is nothing more special than spending the holiday season surrounded by snow, pine trees and the towering peaks of the Rockies.
It is truly my wish that you enjoy this little escape and fall in love with Castle Mountain Lodge during the majestic winter season.

~Elena

Unexpected Gifts is the first book in the Castle Mountain Lodge series, but it's a standalone and from the short excerpt of book two, it's clear that each book has its own characters and the only connection is the setting - the Castle Mountain Lodge resort - and some of the characters, basically the people who work in the resort.
The first chapter pulled me in immediately. We meet Andi, a party planner, and Eva, her funny business partner and friend, while they're at work. Andi is having a hard time surviving the festivities, since she's trying to recover from her ex dumping her after she lost their baby. She's broken and not exactly in the mood for Christmas celebration and, as the last straw, her father calls her to inform her last minute that they will not be celebrating Christmas with her, as his new wife has organized a trip to Disneyworld for their 3-year-old twins. In order to avoid spending Christmas alone, brooding over her life and all that she's lost, Andi accepts an invitation that the Castle Mountain Lodge resort sent to their office. After all, spending a few days in a mountain resort, reading a book and enjoying the snow can be quite inviting.
Enters Colin. He's Canadian too, just like Andi, but has been living in the Caribbeans for the last five years, expanding his business and putting it before anything else. Scarred by a serious relationship that didn't end too well, the last thing he wants is to get involved with someone else. Back in Canada, he's determined to enjoy the true Christmas spirit, in the Canadian way: snow, ice-skating, mountains, Christmas trees and all that he's missed over the last five years. So he gets a room in the Castle Mountain Lodge and he gets there just in time to find a desperate Andi talking to the resort manager.

I really loved this romantic novel. It is always wonderful to think that in real life this could happen just like the author is telling the story. I think it does actually sometime and that is what give us all hope for the main character as she tries to escape her real life for the Christmas vacation only to find love in all the right places.
I live in south Florida and loved the snowy scenes, making it feel like the Christmas season even though it was warm enough to turn on our air conditioning. The description of the resort made me feel in the mood. The cover pulled me in and the story didn't let me down.

This book was advertised under Christian romance.

Probably because the Christmas holiday was included.

Definitely should not have been included under that heading.

Explicit sex, corny and predictable plot.

I sat down last night with "Unexpected Gifts", intending to read only the first chapter or two. However the story was so good and the character so "real" that I wasn't able to put it down until the last page was read. I would definitely recommend this book, and am anxiously awaiting for what Elena has for us next!

Writing ok, but I don't care for books that take casual sex as a given. As far as I could tell that was the plot of this romance. So not interested.

Not God-honoring. Premarital sex is commonplace & expected. Elena's definition of "wanting to take things slow" meant sex on 2nd date, which is the ONLY reason why there wasn't a play-by-play of going all the way, though it did get very intense physically. All within a week of knowing the guy, who only used women for sex (he hadn't had a relationship in 5 years that lasted over a week). And the reader's to assume that he didn't leave her that week, or when they returned to their real lives. I'd searched for "Christian Fiction". It sure is fiction, but not Christian. If you're interested in that. try books by Hallee Bridgeman.

I was mislead, this book is NOT innocent or Christian like it was billed. The whole lodge concept was intriguing and the storyline had possibilities. There is so much more to a relationship than heat!

Andi was not a happy camper when it came to Christmas. Wants nothing to do with it. Colin loves Christmas and couldn't wait to celebrate it. When these 2 meet, can Colin convince her to open up and enjoy it, but there is a reason why she doesn't want to celebrate. Will she confess??? Read it and find out.... ;)
