You don't need to be a cyclist to appreciate Dex's story.

I started this book on a Friday afternoon and finished it before the weekend was over. Sure, I love cycling and am fascinated the extremes endurance athletes push themselves to in pursuit of their goals. However, I was struck more by the supporting cast. A whole crew of people put their lives on hold to make it possible for this amazing athlete and ordinary guy to have another chance at a race that crippled him physically and psychologically the year before when he was unable to finish. They stood by him in the face of his suffering and his treatment of them, questioning themselves in the process (including a wife of 40 years who was as much a part of Dex's success as he, struggling to keep it together in the last miles as she feared for him). As a reader, I found myself wondering why they kept going, why anyone would submit him or herself to almost two weeks of physical and mental agony, but as the story unfolded I got a little glimpse into the motivations of people who step outside of their normal lives in pursuit of something greater. I couldn't help but to be inspired all of the people in this book.

It is a great book that tells a story of someone (Dex Tooke) who just does not accept to quit, despite a heartbreaking failure at his first try at the Race Across America, a non-stop 3,000 miles bike race from Oceanside, CA to Annapolis, MD. In his book, Dex does not hide anything, from the brutal toll that RAAM does to his body, to the not-so-cool mood-changing due to sleep deprivation, that goes from being the super nice guy to being a complete jerk. His raw, honest, and sometimes very emotional account of his odyssey makes this book absolutely riveting, and as the saying goes: you can't put it down as you want to know what's going to happen next.

Finally Dex Tooke, like the olympian Dara Torres and many other athletes, proves once again that age is just a number!

Presumably if you are considering this book at all you must have an interest in cycling. It is a story of human spirit played out on a bike, but it could have been in any setting that tests your physical and mental limits to their utmost. It is extremely inspiring for anyone to read. It is of particular inspiration to cyclists who are contemplating ultra riding of any sort. It is extremely informative to anyone contemplating competing in the Race Across America (RAAM).

I first heard about this book in an interview with Dennis Johnson who used it to aid his own preparation for his own 2014 race. After reading it you will have tremendous appreciation for what it takes to prepare both the racer and the support team for this endurance race.

Good book on RAAM. It gave me a real feel for what it's like to prep for then ride in this monster race. When I thought of RAAM, I thought of the enormous amount of training it would take to ride 3000 miles with only short sleep breaks. However, from reading this book, it seems like half the effort is organizing the support team, equipment, food, etc.

My primary criticism is that it could tone down the "Dex is the center of this universe" tone. All the quotes off the web of how inspiring Dex is got old quick. I chuckled when Dex mentioned he was a high maintenance rider ... oh really?

Nevertheless, it's an impressive achievement and a good book.

It is an invaluable glimpse behind the scenes of this most grueling race. Riders can find lots of ways to prepare for RAAM, but this book has lots of ideas to prepare a crew. It was mandatory reading for all our crew members, and they were very glad to have done so. To top it off, we all met Dex at this year's Race Across America. Can't recommend him and his book enough if you are preparing for your own ultra-cycling experience!

I recently had the opportunity to meet Dex at the end of an ultra marathon ride across the state of Texas. Even though I was familiar with RAAM and also an avid cyclist I never thought I'd have the opportunity to meet a world class athlete in person.

Well this guy is for real, just amazing. His book is an excellent story of the mental and physical suffering of what one would have to go through to complete RAAM. Also in the book are details of how important a supportive and experienced team is behind a racer who is competing in RAAM.

I've been one of those rabid RAAM online followers that Dex so aptly describes in this terrific behind-the-scenes angle on his solo Race Across America. But now as I am preparing to crew for a 4-man relay team in RAAM 2012, I found this book extremely helpful in how Dex describes in brutal honesty the mental and physical (and sometimes terrifying) challenges as he pedaled his way 3000 miles from Oceanside, CA to Annapolis, MD. Sometimes a bit ..er.. intimate in detail (necessary to understanding however) and sometimes laugh-out-loud funny.
This is the book to read if you want to learn the gritty truth of the passion and anguish of a RAAM quest.

I wasn’t sure what to expect from this book. The author is very much a Texan and proud of it so there are lots of references to his home state. However, once you get into the riding part it really grips you.

You feel like you are along with him for the RAAM. You really empathise with his pain and the anxiety of whether or not he will make it this time.

The race is all about whether you can stand the physical and, more importantly, mental strain of riding your bike for 13 days straight. He gets sores, permanent hand damage, skin like leather but the sleep deprivation is horrendous. 15 min power naps when he is weaving dangerously across the road at 3am but then has to keep on going. Wow.
