We enjoy Jennifer Lopez as a musician and have enjoyed her participation in American Idol, but we had little appreciation of her acting abilities. Perhaps we hadn't seen the right movies, in the past. But we were surprised to see that she holds her own in an ensemble that includes two of the greatest living actors of our time.
Redford and Freeman play off each other in marvelous ways. They're both wounded, crusty old guys who can occasionally rise to a challenge in startling ways. That's the fun of this film, really: Watching them dust themselves off and truly rise to the occasion when Lopez shows up at the door of their ranch with Redford's estranged granddaughter.
If you've missed this film, as we did, this is truly worth the price of admission!
Jean~ (Jennifer Lopez) showing the marks of abuse by her boyfriend, takes off with her 11-year-old daughter Griff to parts unknown. They end up at a broken-down ranch owned by her father in law Einar, who blames her for the death of his only son. His discovery of a grandchild does not make much difference since he is a grumpy bitter old man. (Robert Redford) who spends his days taking care of ranch hand Mitch (Morgan Freeman). Mitch was mauled by a huge bear that now spends a sad life caged a grain bin in a roadside Zoo. Jean is hired as a waitress who catches the attention of the local law Crane. Einar finds it hard to not like the girl who is the image of his dead son. Griff soon becomes a reason to live for both Mitch and Einar. Abuser Gary (Damian Lewis) shows up to drag Jean home. But finds the sheriff and Einar are both her new protectors. This is excellent. The plot flows and the scenery is gorgeous. Freeman and Redford are perfect as the old men who discover a reason to move ahead because of a child and old bear. a visual delight. 5 stars ~
I used to live in this area so perhaps I am a bit blinded by that fact but it does a great job to capture what life in Wyoming is like and the characters are fantastic. This movie goes beyond family healing and also teaches it's characters to learn to forgive and accept. To remember the lost while also realizing life is for the living.
The bear is a better character by himself than most romance movies offer. I don't really see how some people could say this movie is sappy when most Nicolas Sparks movies have some much cheese you can get a heart attack just for watching. For me everything feels realistic and organic. Great movie about new starts and accepting your ending with happiness. This is one of the top 25 best movies I have ever watched. When people ask me about this movie I never say it's a romance movie. I say it's a great movie about life and dealing with the spectrum of emotions it sends your way.
As the stars I've given suggests, I loved the movie. However, it's not 5 stars, but around 4.5.
It's one of the best movies, personally, but not the best, hence 4.5.
First of all, I can't say enough about the actors and actresses in this movie.
Mr. Redford is superbly wonderful actor. His performance was so real that the movie captured my attention throughout.
Mr. Freeman was great as well. I would also have to give kudos to the little young lady.
If you like fast moving, action packed movies, this movie could be very slow for you. However, if you like to delve into layers of human emotions, this movie should warm yours.
The movie lingers on after the credits has rolled on.
I'm not very good at giving movie reviews as you can see, but this movie is a must see, IMHO.

I was suprised with how I felt about Jennifer as didnt realise she could pleasantly act. the kids pretty amazing too.
All in all well worth the money and time spent.
Jennifer Lopez plays Jean, who takes her daughter Griff (Becca Gardner) & runs from her abusive boyfriend. They end up at her father in law (Robert Redford)'s ranch, who takes her in despite there being old wounds & differences between the two. Morgan Freeman is wonderful, as always, as the family friend. The scenery is gorgeous; all mountains & lush green.
I loved the film. It's a little slow but give it your time & it will reward you with a touching story of unlikely friendships & the power of forgiveness.
