Almaas by my assessment is the clearest of the nondual teaching fraternity. This book presents a series of contemplations that are supported by clear examples and analysis. The experiential focus is extremely helpful and for me is where the opportunity lies to test the truth of what is being presented for yourself. I find the writing more concise and engaging than say Spira and less esoteric than say Tolle who I feel tends to discuss the topic of nonduality without the real clarity contained in this offering. I recommend this book as one that can be used for ongoing practice and to work with direct experiential understanding processes through leaving experiences alone.

This book is the written record of Almaas's teaching retreat of 2003 for experienced students. It deals with various aspects of the self-realization process itself: how to work with different key issues in realizing the essential self. The tone of the book is that of an experienced teacher talking to his students, explaining how becoming aware of certain issues as identification with image, lack of self-acceptance, avoidance of feelings, self-hatred and so on can be transformed into essential aspects if dealt with in the right way. He actually leads them in an exploration of each of these key issues and shows how to work with them in a fruitful way. I recommend this book for serious students and practitioners of essential realization.

True Introduction to Inquiry

I have read, or at least attempted five or six of this author's books. This was the only one that I found completely relevant for practice. With my Zen background, I tend to have a problem with teachers who talk up metaphysical abstractions and over intellectualizaions, (Although many Zen teachers can go too far in the other direction) and people like Ken Wilber who write massive works and seem to have everything figured out for you.

Don't get me wrong, I believe that this author stands out from every other independent teacher. He dares to question the status quo in conventional spiritual practice. He emphasizes essential development, or awakening for the everyday person for everyday life. And his philosophy that there is no dichotomy between spiritual and psychological practice, that psychological practice is a leverage on awakening that the ancient practices did not have or understand. I have read and re-read the Elixir of Enlightenment and found that line of questioning to be utterly genius.

This book is a collection of talks about how students of his school can inquire into their direct experience while also practicing a sitting meditation. And the talks have been edited for book form.

The author already has a book on inquiry but I found this one to be much much more direct and coherent. Through him and another teacher or two, I learned the missing practice in traditional spiritualities, "direct INQUIRY into one's present experience." I found that this inquiry is very difficult because it is organic and creative. But each inquiry session at the end of each chapter is a great starting point, before letting go of form for one's inquiry. As another teacher said, without inquiry, meditation can become disassociation from reality.

I personally find that I begin to digest the massive amounts of information on the spiritualities and psychologies I have interest in when I inquire (with a journal). What is genius about inquiry is that you learn every spiritual, metaphysical highest truth, or even psychological theories, are nothing but abstractions in your mind until understood in one's direct experience. So although this book is based on the author's diamond approach, it has a very Buddhist feel to me.

Highly recommended for those who seek a direct approach to a coherent practice and not just more abstractions from another spiritual teacher's subjective experience.

One of the clearest writings on practice

I always found Almaas's books some of the clearest writings for the practical application of Zen practice, or what he calls Work. His Diamond Heart series is very easy to understand and apply. The chapter on The Theory of Holes in Diamond Heart Book One is worth reading alone. At times, Almaas seems a little verbose and the message gets watered down with too many words. Some of his books have just been hard to read unless you're an intellectual. I'm a layman. Keep it simple.

And that's exactly what Almaas does in The Unfolding Now. His best writing to date. A practical guide to living life in an honest, practice-minded manner. If you practice meditation, this will help clarify what you do on the cushion as well as your daily life. I wish there was an opportunity to work with his school, but distance is an issue for many of us. Thankfully, he's given us some wonderful writings.

Some fundamental insight gained from this well written book

I have read a lot in this genre, looking for meaning I suppose. I gained some further insight in a fundamental sense from this book. That is as good as it gets from what I can tell. Another step closer to seeing what is; what I am.

I have practiced meditation on and off for quite a few years. While I still have chattering thoughts that nearly constantly arise, I am learning to acknowledge and let them go more and more from a place of calm. In this book I have seen, among other things, that this is a good tactic with more than just thoughts during meditations. All that arises, thoughts, feelings etc. may best be managed by simple acknowledgment and then letting go, thereby staying in the now with no judgment or rejection. Feelings seem a bit different though. Whereas most thoughts I tend to just let go like dropping falling leaves into a stream to dissolve much like a breath, feelings seem meant to be explored and, well, "felt" in the very physical they appear.

I expect I will read this book again.

Like Tolle, but in the real world

I feel like A. H. Almaas and Tolle are speaking about the same things, but Tolle can be a little esoteric and abstract for me. When I read this, I felt I like I finally got it. A. H. Almaas writes about enlightenment in the context of everyday life in a way that I could really understand. I recommend this to my friends.
