This album has no business being as good as it is.

I first discovered Rufus in his Poses/Want One days, and finally caught him on tour several times during the Release the Stars tour. Those albums were (and remain) incredibly beautiful and powerful and meaningful for me. Dinner At Eight will still reduce me to tears every time.

I continued to follow Rufus through his musical journey over the years, but nothing struck me like those early albums did.

    Until this one.

It took a few listens, but songs like Romantical Man and Unfollow the Rules are unmistakable compositions of genius. The album taken as a whole tells a story from a wisened, sometimes world-weary, but open-hearted matured man and his take on the current world and his place in it. The poetry of lyrics like "Can't be pedantic, if you've got to look it up, the definition" and "Just like Hercules in Thebes was just by just being a man" leave me awestruck.

If you can catch his live performance of the album tracks from his quarantined recording at the Paramor I highly recommend it, for a stripped down interpretation of all these tracks.

Overall, I am happy to be growing older with Rufus' music as my soundtrack.

I first heard of Rufus Wainright by chance when I happened to see him on Austin City Limits. I loved his music at once and ordered Unfollow The Rules after the show. The words to his songs are beautiful and the music is so uplifting. I can't stop listening to it. Such a treasure!

Quite simply, this is Rufus' best album since 2003's "Want One." Lovely melodies, thoughtful lyrics, well produced, beautifully performed. I would only quibble with "This One's for the Ladies." Rufus, it is 2020. There are a lot of women out there who honestly do not want to be called "Ladies." It's sexist. Other than that, this is the Rufus album you've been waiting a LONG time for!

I'd been so anticipating Rufus' return to "pop music", especially his unique stylings, lyrics, melodies and production since "Vibrate" (Best of....) And all his previous albums, and I am so not disappointed! It's brilliant! A good length, some sad, some love songs, and all clever in a way that only Rufus Wainwright can deliver. Don't miss this one! It ain't no opera nor a ballet. It's pure genius!

With a voice reminiscent of Nilsson in his heyday, Rufus Wainwright takes the music in directions you don't expect. A great "easy listening" experience but with songs that have emotional impact! There is both sadness and joy in his singing!

This is a stunning album. I've listened many times, and continue to find new musical and poetic references and connections. His voice is resonant and smooth, soaring gracefully through the melodies, unexpected, poignant, and confident. If you liked his earlier stuff as I do, this album won't disappoint. Rufus just keeps getting better!
