Paul McComas is the author of three and editor of two critically acclaimed books. His most recent, the comedic coming-of-age novel Planet of the Dates, is in development as a Hollywood feature. Paul performs his work live across the country, teaches in Chicago, and makes award-winning films in Evanston, Illinois, where he lives with his wife, fellow fiction writer Heather McComas.

I'm still working my way through the dozens of tales packed into this collection, but I love that there is so much to enjoy. McComas swings between wildly different environments, from barren ice worlds to suburban basements, with a giddiness too often missing in sci-fi, horror and fantasy. The moods between stories shift as well, from winking satire to chill-through-the-veins suspense. There is a lot of wry humor throughout, along with sense of nostalgia that anyone who grew up on a diet of badly dubbed Godzilla movies can appreciate. A particularly excellent choice when traveling--with even a short airport layover you can flip open the Kindle and indulge in one or two or ten games with the pinball machine that is McComas' imagination.

Frightening Visions and a Compelling Voice

Paul McComas has more energy in his writing than any other writer I know. He stretches the imagination into dark caves where monsters lurk. And then he'll hit you with a twist so bizarre it's funny--or so funny it's bizarre. He's a great monologist and his dialects are pitch-perfect; he's also a master of satire. McComas is also clearly a generous man, sharing credit and ink with other writers with whom he has collaborated, and giving away the secrets of his trade and his career. Anyone interested in how a serious yet playful writer works will be enlightened by his introductions and mini-essays about the creation of these wild stories, some of which were written when he was a teenaged fan, some extracted from his own fine novels, some written for literary zines, some written as outgrowths of the classes he teaches.

So why only four stars, not five? Believe me, what I like in this book I like very much, even though I've never spent much time with horror, science fiction, fantasy, and such. I wasn't as entranced, though, by the scripts of McComas's screenplays and dramas. I think that's because I'm stuck on prose fiction. Don't hold this prejudice of mine against Paul McComas's talent.

The price is steep, yes. The purchase is worth it. These stories will keep you awake at night.

A veteran writer, creating the unforgettable

Ordinarily, this type of book would be a recipe for disaster. It's a mix of genres (horror, sci-fi, dark comedy, etc.); includes songs, novel excerpts, and screenplays; features stories written with other authors (including William F. Nolan of Logan's Run fame); and has commentary for almost every piece in it. Again, a recipe for disaster ... except, somehow, it's not. In fact, Unforgettable is truly just as its title promises.

Author Paul McComas has been writing since he was a young boy (some of his youthful stories are included here), and his love of the art is apparent in every piece in this book. His commentary preceding each work is a delight as well, helping you feel like you really are getting to know the author.

Not every story is a winner, and not all will be to your liking, but I predict you will enjoy the majority of them. ("Malfeasance" is shudder-inducing and very timely, and "The Rail" will haunt you.) Some are disturbing; some are genuinely funny or touching. All of them show imagination and skill, making this book one of the best collections of 2011. And that doesn't even take into consideration the Logan's Run stories in it. -- Doug Brunell for the FEARLESS REVIEWS

Magestic Monster Mavenhood

As a person with a predilection for the human monster in all its manifestations these stories delighted. Although I can't claim that they aren't - despite their finely honed irony, wit and humor - sometimes rather disturbing. But that's genius at work. So let yourself fall into McComas' grasp - you won't regret it. He;s a master story teller working at the top of his craft. Hold onto your hat (and your horns) he'll take you there.
