They probably have new fans now that enjoy their new direction, but I will stick with their older Symphonic Metal music and older live CDs and Video performances.
Then I tried the same procedure with "The Heart of Everything". The end result: 2 out of 13. But those 2 are really really good. And the other songs are good too, don't get me wrong. I just won't listen to them for the rest of my life.
So this brings us to "The Unforgiving". I decided to tweak my approach. I listened to all the songs repeatedly on Spotify until I could tell which ones might be lifetime keepers. Turns out I came up with 11 out of 15, an amazingly high proportion, perhaps higher than any album I've ever listened to. I figured it had to be because I was listening to the songs while multitasking and on my computer instead of my mp3 player which has way better sound quality. I was prepared to buy just the individual songs, but 11 individual songs would have cost more than the mp3 album itself, so I bought the album. Onto my mp3 player went the 11 songs, and for days now I have been listening to them over and over with my full attention. And they have held. I may retire one, not sure yet, though it has an awfully good guitar solo at the end and is pretty good all through. But even if I end up with ten, 10 songs out of 15 is amazing. And they are so good they are addictive. I crave them day and night, and I'm not exaggerating.
Within Temptation, what can I say - one of the best groups I have ever encountered in my life, which has gone on for almost 62 years now. Not that I've been able to convince anyone else my age to like them. So I'm not saying this is a group for people in late middle age. It's a group for anyone who appreciates cleverly written, relatively complex music that features great vocals, great guitar work, some symphonic instrumentation, and a metal but melodic sound.

Do I recommend it? Dumb question! If you love the band you'll love this. If you love loud, unapologetic rock music then you won't be disappointed in anything here and you'll want to discover their earlier releases. It's been on since I received it from Amazon and I know my daughter will want this too. There is no better rock band working today who sound so good either on their own or utilizing an orchestra. Emotional, proudly wearing it's heart on a sleeve, get this into your collection and you'll be glad you spent so little on so much!
#1 Why Not Me
A creepy opening to the album.
#2 Shot In The Dark
An great song with a great guitar riff and catchy lyrics.
#3 In The Middle Of The Night
I'm not a big fan of this track to be honest. More noise than music, and the lyrics aren't exactly memorable.
My favourite song on the album! The guitar, the singing and the incredible chorus make this an awesome track you want to play again and again! Headbangin' stuff!
#5 Fire And Ice
A very good, emotional song.
This is epic! Adrenalin from the start and very catchy! More creepy speech part the way through, but that thankfully doesn't ruin it.
#7 Where Is The Edge
Not bad. This is a good song, and another dramatic bit of guitar helps it along.
Brilliant! Immense music compliments the great lyrics perfectly!
This is a very dramatic, sad song. Excellent.
Amazing! The whole track is thrilling, tense, and thoroughly enjoyable.
#11 A Demon's Fate
This track is alright. Doesn't stand out as much as others on the album though.
#12 Stairway To The Skies
A wonderful finale to a tremendous album of music.
I highly reccomend this album to anyone reading this page. There are a lot of disapointing albums around, but this would definately be money well-spent! I'm very happy that I got it!
Sharon's vocals are once again astounding. We hear a lot more lower, darker tones to her voice here, revealing a much more raw and animalistic quality. She does however still use her full range, soaring over melodies on Faster, Sinead, Lost and Iron.
The introduction of the new drummer is very apparant, once again adding a harsher more raw dynamic. The beats on this album could be compared to the likes of Nightwish or Epica.
Musically the band retains its orchestral trademark, whist fusing some retro 80's pop riffs with some very catchy synths. Tracks like Sinead really prove that the band is not afraid to step out of its comfort zone and try something new successfully.
Another great album from Within Temptation. I cannot wait until the tour!
